Difficult to judge from the story if that is actually Kimi's preferred option, but if it is my opinion of him has dropped right down, if he is so clearly and obviously motivated just by the cash rather than taking part in F1. If he does choose this option, I hope no F1 team ever hires him again, not that he would be too bothered.

I think he was incredibly lucky that Ferrari signed him up to such a big bucks deal in the first place, yes he is a fast driver, but he doesn't deserve to be paid more than all the other current F1 drivers, which has obviously given him an inflated opinion of himself.

Quite apart from which it is obvious he doesn't bother to put much into a team, in terms of testing, development, and also quite clearly from this story he can't even be bothered with the sponsors, who are the ones at the end of the day who pay his ludicrous salary!

It would have been interesting to see him shape up to Lewis at McLaren, but I'd be happy to see Nick Heidfeld go there, who I do agree is a highly underrated driver - he keeps getting the results and outscored his much lauded team mate Kubica this year.

According to his termination deal with Ferrari, the Italian team has promised to pay Raikkonen €17m if he does not race in F1 next year, and €10m if he finds suitable employment elsewhere.

Mclaren have offered him £5 Million? That sounds about right to me, not sure what he has recently done that would make him think he is worth anymore to be honest. Mclaren are giving him a shot at the WDC next year and he should grab it with both hands.

Whats remarkable is that he would still be the second highest paid driver next year behind Alonso - the guy is obviously driven by money. As for Heidfield? Just another Heiki in my opinion, i would be looking at Jenson or Rosberg.

It's a low-ball offer but it makes sense to start low...

IMO his negotiation with McLaren is exactly that - his camp and McLaren. For McLaren to use his arrangements with Ferrari as leverage is a bit cheeky but fair play for trying.

Given the short shelf life of an F1 drivers career it's hardly surprising and almost naive to think that money isn’t at least one of the major motivations for a driver to continue, having been in f1 for 8 years, you can hardly blame the chap for not wanting a year out (especially if he’s going to earn MILLIONS more by not racing) or maybe Raikkonen has discovered that the 2010 McLaren isn’t going to be very good

It may be low-ball but he still ends up with $15m for his work for the year, which isn't too shabby and is more than this years world champion is apparently struggling to squeeze out of Brawn.

I fully agree; the amount involved is colossal. Button is worth it but I think he has less leverage than Raikkonen. The issue of contention is a new employer using voluntary severance pay you received as a negotiating tool to drive down your pay offer. Raikkonen is not a £5m a year driver IMO. It's a negotiation and McLaren havn't done anything wrong but I can't see Raikkonen driving for £5m when Lewis is on a £70million (albeit multi-season) deal.

if i was offered $17m to take a year off, or $15m to potentially get papped on by lewis (not looking to start an arguement) and have to do PR stuffs, i'd take the former option.

i hope he does, and then heidfeld can help mclaren to WCC.

In the last 2 years, Heidfeld has had 2 DNFs, Kov has had 8. That difference translates into a lot of WCC points, and prize money. Some drivers seem to be especially good at sensing where to avoid placing the car, whilst others seem too often to get drawn into things that end badly.

I'm not sure that either Button or Rosberg is actually available to McL. Two years ago McL. made a major effort to prise Rosberg away, but Williams would not let him go.

What we've been told this year is that Merc have been trying to engineer Rosberg's moving from Williams to Brawn.
Also, 2 years ago the story was that Keke was opposed to having his son up against Hamilton.

As you allude, single- v multi-year is not comparable, so without knowing Hamilton's annual comp we've no benchmark for Raikkonen's. Another big issue with McLaren drivers is personal image rights. Historically McLaren had held them, rather than granting them to their drivers. IINM, Hamilton's new contract lets him retain the rights. Also, the drivers might get bonuses for wins. I understood that, when he was there, McLaren paid KR $1m for each win.
My guess is that LH is getting about $15m/yr from McL, and more privately from his image rights, although he is probably obliged to allow team sponsors to use his image FOC.

Are you serious?!??! I really can't see him doing that! When Kimi is on it he is up there with Lewis, Massa, Alonso etc.... so the opportunity to drive a potential world championship winning car next will win the day over money IMO.

Why?

Its hassle. Traipsing around the world for 3/4s of the year? Sponsors wanting every minute of your time. Your car might be crap, your team mate might show you up. You might get hurt. You have already won the WC. You have been doing it for 8 yrs. You dont need the money.

Frankly Im with Kimi on this one. He doesnt need it, he doesnt care and frankly he is offering a one shot deal...its my way or no way, take it or leave it. Just as it should be, I would be doing exactly the same thing if I was Kimi. If someone doesnt play ball and give me what I want Id be saying "so long and thanks for all the fish" and going home/doing something I want to do at my own pace.

F1 is a young blokes game. Once you get a family, a base somewhere, some independance and you have climbed the mountain then you start to look at things in a different light. I had a shot at all that life a few yrs ago, when Jag were recruiting, they were doing an awful lot of sniffing around for aerospace guys, similarly the mechachrome boys wanted to tap me up back in the day, but you have to look at the grief involved.

I would be surprised if Kimi really gave a toss about the money - he's as rich as Croesus anyway. The stumbling block with McLaren is more likely to be about whether he can go Rallying or not, how much sponsor work he has to do & whether he can get equal treatment to Hamilton.

mclaren don't need kimi. mclaren have one of the best drivers, the man who won them the title, who the sponsers love and who is committed to mclaren. Why would they risk putting his nose out of joint by re-signing the "defector" on a big $$$ deal? Performance-deal- why not, big 2nd year deal should he pip lewis, of course, but he has to prove himself again.

I'd love to see kimi.v.lewis, but if kimi is serious when he say he wants to race in F1, then he needs mclaren more than maclaren need him. World champs have been treated worse, Damon Hill springs to mind, so either be an F1 driver and sign on the line or fk off to play with your snownobils

That's assuming everything you've read/heard is entirely accurate. Anyone who says they wouldn't be in two minds IF they were in KR's position is not being honest.

It's been a long time as well since a champ took time out and came back (disregarding Villeneuve) the last guy to do it was Lauda wasn't it? Not a bad thing to do if circumstances don't suit you.

So if this money grabber takes a year out - What championship winning team does he think is going to come looking for his signature in 2011? It wont be Mclaren or Ferrari so were does he go? Brawn nor RedBull have shown no interest in him and he obviously wants a fat pay deal. So where does that leave him?

I think we may have seen the last of Kimi as a potential WDC if he does not sign on the dotted line this year. The guy has never lived upto his hype and this was an opportunity to do something.

I stand corrected! F1 has obviously changed a bit with longer term contracts, etc, but it could be done. It's been more prevalent in WRC AFAIK, but could be workable if KR has a different remuneration situation, which it will be as time passes. This year coming is a weird one in that regard.
