Always been a fan of Walter's, he is one of the greats. That video was a lot of fun, working out in my head what was coming next knowing the track well from the usual direction. It's a shame you don't get the sensation of the gradients much on video, knowing what they are like gives a much better insight into what the car is about to do and how he can get away with being so aggressive some times. Great stuff.

git!! what a fabulous video. isnt it great to see a race driver using a clutch & a manual gearbox? oversteer. how many of todays race drivers know how to handle that? not many as it rarely happens.
wouldnt it be good to see the fia ban all driver 'aids' - such as sequential gearboxes, flappy paddles, etc & insist that all race & rally cars have three pedals - clutch, brake & accelerator - & a proper manual gearbox.
that would sort the men from the boys wouldnt it?
& on the subject of the ring - why does it look so easy on the video? i have spent hours on my xbox with forza motorsport 3 trying to learn the ring in a variety of road & race cars.
can i get it right? can i hell!!! its so bloody difficult. true respect to anyone who can master the real thing. i did a few laps 5 years ago. scared the living crap out of me. awesome place to which i need to make a return journey.

As said, this is from a DVD, which I highly recommend watching, its about an hour in total.
I've watched the DVD dozens of times now, trying to learn as much as possible from it.
One thing I really want to get a hold of is substantial footage of this length/quality/setup/kind from the group B days. I know it exists. Probably most here have seen the onboard clips on youtube or other of Rohrl driving the audi quattro in portugal.
I can't for the life of me find an entire stage-worth of onboard though. Great though it is to watch, its much better when the perspective stays the same, you can then properly understand whats going on and really appreciate it.
edit: oh and guess who, at 62, very recently won a rally in a historic porsche?

The Australian V8 Supercars championship used cars with clutch pedals and H-pattern gearboxes until 2008. One of the very few top-flight championships to do so, I think.fatboy69 said:

To be fair, Rohrl is one of the most experienced Ring drivers alive. He has done hundreds of laps there, perhaps even thousands.very impressive, it is the whole ring backwards? it may have changed over the years but to me it looks like it is parts of the ring (driven in reverse direction) joined up with the smaller link roads

That's my theory too. There's a stretch at the beginning of the clip with white lines in the middle and some very tight lanes too so I don't think it's all the NordschleifeI know all those roads extremely well, the footage starts on what is normally public road, which i tend to use to warm the car up and cool it down between runs on the circuit. If you go out of the main public entrance to the circuit and turn right, follow that to the T junction then look left, thats where the little link road from the public road section onto the track is. So turning left at that T junction puts you on the public road that is used for the start section, but you are going in the opposite direction.
The link from the public road puts you onto the circuit at what is normally the exit of Galgenkopf, which is the start of the long straight of Dottinger Hohe.
Walter has done many thousands of laps of the 'ring testing the latest generation 911's, so i think you will struggle to find someone more suited to doing that run. I've always fancied having a run of the circuit backwards, it would make for a very different challenge, it would be damn quick going down Kesselchen, which is why they put the false chicane in, it's a real power section going up the usual direction.
