Silverstone Gets British GP Back

Flagship race is back on at the 'home of British motor sport'

The British Grand Prix will return to Silverstone next year after the circuit's owners signed a 17-year deal with Bernie Ecclestone.

The 2010 race will be held at the Northamptonshire circuit on 11 July next year after Donington Park, which had been set to host the British GP for the next decade and a half, failed to raise sufficient funds for the redevelopment of the East Midlands circuit.

The deal between the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC), the owners of Silverstone, and F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, will involve a significant redevelopment of the circuit. This will be focused on rebuilding the pit and paddock areas.

The deal is said to be worth more than £300 million, and Ecclestone is understood to have foregone up to £60m in fees.

"The title of Silverstone as home of motorsport has come true," said BRDC president Damon Hill. "It is a place for all motorsport. Everyone in the BRDC loves motorsport and we are looking forward to the MotoGP as well as the British Grand Prix.

"It is not easy to enter into a contract of this magnitude and you have to take on a lot of responsibility, but the BRDC wanted this relationship to continue. Everyone was well aware that the British GP is not just a sporting event, but it is the dynamo of the industry in this country. Losing it would have been damaging and perhaps there would have been no coming back."

Predictable, but unfortunate for Donnington, I'm sure a lot of money has been invested in the re-development there. Still Silverstone is and always will be the home of the British GP as far as I'm concerned.

Good news!

How will Bernie survive without that £60m....

17 year deal!

So there was Bernie moaning about the place and now there will be a GP there for a decade and a half.

It was ALWAYS going to stay at Silverstone, IMHO Donington was just a stick that Bernie was waving to get what he wanted.

If the figures of £12m, 5% escalation and 17 years are to be believed, then in 2027 it will cost them £37.9m to stage at which time they will have paid Ecclestone a total of £400m for the whole contract!!

I can’t see how that can be viable.

I bet the BRDC are chuckling in their Committee rooms but if the 2nd bit IS true then he should be made to shore up the costs incurred by the Donington circuit organisers for nearly screwing up that circuit as a racing venue.

Great news but I can't help feeling sorry for Donnington who lost out massivley, not only with loss of revenue and prestige of the BGP and all the spin off business that buys but also in the loss of the Moto GP, their biggest race.

Do you think they might actually invest in the place now.

You see these amazing new circuits (like Abu Dhabi, but also Turkey and Malaysia, etc) and Silverstone is a hole in comparison.

Grandstands are rubbish generally and the on site facilities are laughable, especially when you consider the ticket price is one of the most expensive on the calendar.

The transport connections are shocking as well. They built the A43 which is a great road and then it goes to a single lane and a mini roundabout as you come off the dual carriageway. What use is that?

The deal is surely the beginning. Now they need to put some effort into sprucing the place up. I'm looking forward to seeing what the track extension for the MOTO GP brings.

Seeing the British GP at Donnington would've been awesome... however the firm didn't expect the worldwide recession, Silverstone is what we all KNOW as the home of the British GP & it's a track the drivers actually like. I hope the BRDC will be able to renew the costs of hosting the race

As glad as I am to see a British GP has been secured it was pretty much a given. It's a shame Donington has been left ruined because of that pipe-dreaming berk Gillet. Quite a high price to pay for what is essentially a contract extension. Fingers crossed the redevelopment of Silverstone is done well.

Such a shame for Donington, that has left it dug up and of no use to anyone, i don't know who but i hope someone is pleased with themselves.

I've lost the place i used to go to to watch my motorsport.

Well Donnington Park is now hosting a Flower Market! Or so it's webpage says..
But to proper stuff for a racetrack and it seems to have events on from mid next year onwards so perhaps it'll come back bigger and better?

Predictable, good news and annoying all at the same time.

Why Bernie felt the need to try and shaft everyone in the process and hold motorsport to ransom is beyond me.

Hateful little self satisfying c0ck!

Glad to see the British GP is safe though!!!

Congratulations to both sides for finally reaching a sensible agreement on this. I'm glad the BRDC also believe they have a deal which will allow them to develop and modernise the circuit further.

This is all good news.
