New F1 Points Sytem

Interesting article on the history of F1 points systems here:

New one is good, but it doesn't go far enough.
I think it should be:
Win - 1000 points.
Second - 100.
Third - 10.
Fourth - 1.
All other positions - zilch.

I'd like to see the NASCAR points system, points for fastest lap, most laps lead etc....http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2009/12/22/think-the-ne...

Whilst it is a little more complex for the spectator, it allows those teams not in with a chance of the win nonetheless to prioritise other ambitions and earn some points for them (not to mention additional exposure for their drivers' talents and their sponsors' brands). It also (and I happen to think this is important) provides a definite learning curve for spectators, which increases the sense of belonging for those who understand it.
My problem with more points for pole, fastest lap etc. is handing the fastest car another advantage over his rivals - he's already starting from the front in the fastest car FFS. If he won points for the fastest qualifying lap maybe he should start from tenth, just to level things out a bit? Should increase the overtaking anyway.

I must admit to being a bit of a purist and I've always liked the idea in formula one that it is race results that count, nothing else. It's an achievement to get poles and fastest laps and it gives the staticians something to play with, but the bottom line is the position at the ne dof the race. LordGrover said:

Fastest car wins. Isn't that how motor racing should be? Points for fastest laps would make the faster drivers more likely to go for it all the way through the race, rather than just naffing off into the distance and then slowing down so that they only go as fast as they need to, rather than as fast as they can.IforB said:

Not a lot of difference with Bernie's medal idea.Win - 1000 points.
Second - 100.
Third - 10.
Fourth - 1.

As far as I'm concerned the World Champion should be the driver who's won most races. End of story.
You don't get points in tennis, snooker, horseracing, cricket, etc do you? You either win the match or you don't.
