VW Golf in the BTCC

Should be interesting to see how they get on considering its been built with no input from VW at all.

Alot of touring cars are built from a shell with standard bolt on parts like the brakes and suspension, engine are usually done by an independent builders and the shell prepped in house.

No doubt someone has raced a Golf somewhere before so the parts and info will be out there.

It won't be much of a hinderance really. The main backing the manufactureres give is money.

Apart from the regulation touring car parts, there must be some mechanical similarity between this and the Seat Leon touring car, which has done pretty well?

The car is based on a MK5 VW Golf shell with a 2.0 16V normally aspirated power unit with a competitive 285bhp. Sadev sequential gearbox, KW competition suspension, Milltek exhaust, HJS Sports catalytic converter and Alcon brake and clutch parts complete the performance package.

And the Seats that performed well were TDIs, although I think there was a privateer in a petrol, as I vaguely recall...

SEAT also ran petrol cars before the switch to the TDi for their final season as a works team.

There was a mk4 GTI raced in the british GT championship 3 or 4 years ago!! it looked suprisingly quick

Do you mean in the support package? In which case, yes there was, amongst many!

The VW Cup runs alongside the GT/F3 package is one of my favourite championships! There is something about a VW Caddy van beating a VW Golf GTI

No, there was one in British GT itself, Stuart Scott was one of the drivers - now has a Mustang in Britcar. Am sure there will be pics on his website or if you do a Google search.

Ooooh, well that was 7 years ago and I wasnt going to that many events (was 12, didnt have own form of transport, obviously!) then hence why I mentioned VW Cup

They declared it ineligible in the end, a shame really.

what happened to the std TOCA gearbox?

and I thought BTCC had an exception from CAT's?

That was a while ago wasn't it?

The cars now run in S2000 spec I think (now the same as WTCC spec). The Integras were running under the old specs.

Anyway the gearboxes are definitely not standard any more as the BMW teams were split across H gate (lighter) and sequential (heavier).

The minimum overall weight was different as well depending on what gearbox you ran according to the S2000 regs.

yea theres a couple different gear box configurations and tha has an effect on the weight if your fwd or rwd.

The BTCC cars now run cats as they are trying to keep the tree huggers happy by looking a bit more environmentally friendly lol.

Martin Johnson's Astra Coupe is certainly running to different specs too, at Thruxton last year I was sitting outside the RML truck as they practised (and fumbled) wheel changes with 4 wheel nuts and one CP air gun per corner, when the ancient Astra rolled by on its centre-lock wheels. Admittedly, my money would still be on the Lacetti but that's a bit of an advantage for the Astra if they have to change tyres mid race!
