Monte Carlo Rally 20th Jan

The Monte is once again a round of the IRC rather than part of the WRC. This means longer stages, more than one service area and a proper Nuit de Col du Turini.

I must admit I'm rather looking forward to this and will probably pay for Eurosports streaming service (You can't get it on Freeview).

Anyone else looking forward to watching this from the comfort of your armchair or even better spectating properly?

Stay in Nice, plenty of cheap places there. I've spectated the Monte a number of times, it's fantastic, just rent a little car like a Micra and you can have a real good laugh up in the mountains getting to the stages, a small car makes it easier when you get near the stages as the roads are quite narrow.

I really, really REALLY wanted to go to this. A proper adventure to follow it this year I think. But I just couldn't make the logistics work :-(

Logistics for the Monte are easy, it's a short flight to Nice, rent a small car, do the rally, fly back from Nice, it's one of the cheapest and easiest events to do.

Not if you want to follow the whole event John, then meet your other half in Chambery Airport on Saturday lunch to begin a weeks skiing holiday!

- First part of event based at Valence, miles from Monaco
- No cheap flights anywhere even close to either base on anything other than Sat/Sun
- Driving over might have worked but expensive due to snow tyres etc being required for the skiing part and an epic drive across the winter Alps straight after an all-nighter on the Col.

It's a proper rally with long liasons. Not as simple as it looks (or as past WRC events).

ETA The ACM even wanted to run a GT rally alongside - but were stopped by FIA red-tape. Can you imagine 911GT3's and Aston V8's over a snowy Col du Turini at night?

Ah, sorry, i haven't been for a few years, sounds like it's even better now!

As long as it ends with a proper night in the stars and bars on the harbour front then it's perfect.

Kubica retired from the prologue stage with engine failure. 8 cars failed to set a time including one brit crew in a Subaru which rolled. the crew is believed to be fine.

Well, I'm loving the coverage - lots of in-car footage and great scenery. Reminds me I need to get back down to the Alps and Riviera soon.

Ogier furious because a spectator put a load of snow on the road and Ogier span off when he hit it - lost 90s or so.

Managed to catch this mornings stages, shame about Meeke going off.

The TV coverage is making the WRC look like a buch of amateurs, the complete opposite the
rubbish you get on Dave.

Bring on the night stages.
