Seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher returned to the cockpit of a racing car on Tuesday morning when he began a three-day testing programme with GP2 machinery.

The German took to the Jerez track early in the morning and completed the first few laps at the wheel of the development car used by the GP2 Series ahead of the 2010 season.

During the test, the Mercedes GP driver will focus on evaluating a number of suspension configurations in order to define new set-up solutions for the race weekends this year.

The test will also be used to evaluate updated components, including a new clutch, to be introduced later this year.

It is the first time Schumacher drives a single-seater since he tried to make a comeback to F1 last year to replace the injured Felipe Massa at Ferrari.

At the time, Schumacher was unable to race because of problems with his neck following a bike crash earlier in the year.

That GP2 car looks better than the current crop of F1 cars smile

Good to see him back in a single seater again. I hope he does well in the coming season.

Does your contact know the fuel onboard, how far the new car is developed, and what type of tyres the team are using relative to last years car?

wink

dry, 25 degrees. Engineers are a bit disappointed with him tbh. He keeps wanting more padding to hold his neck up or something?

right, it was a bit of a crackly line, and i couldn't hear much over the engine noise (furking bluetooth) but he reckons the tyres were the latest spec, light fuel, and has adjusted the front dampers two clicks softer on the bound. oh and he said his Micheal's neck was hurting. wimp!

Except of course that isn't a GP2 car. It can't be if they're testing F1 suspension and clutches on it, so it must be a mule with F1 running gear under a GP2 body. With the longer fuel tank and different engine the aero will be all to cock.
