US-spec Jaguar XK Racer Hits The UK

Jaguar ALMS racer to make rare UK visit to Autosport show

The new and rather lovely Jaguar RSR XKR GT racer will make its European debut at this week's Autosport International show. It's the only chance you'll have to see the car in Blighty before it heads back to the US for the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) championship season.

It might have been a while since the 1980s Group C glory days of the XJR-9, and even longer since the 1950s Jaguar domination of Le Mans, but it's good to Jaguar still playing its part in sports car racing.

The 550bhp ALMS Jaguar is built to GT2 sports car regulations, and has been jointly created by the Jaguar engineering and design teams in Coventry, and the Michigan-based RSR team.

"Our designers and engineers have taken the best of our standard road-going XKR and with Paul Gentilozzi's motorsport expertise created a first-class competition car," says Mike O'Driscoll, managing director of Jaguar. "Paul and his RSR team are confident that they can compete against some serious competition in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS)."

The XKR GT will share the Jaguar stand at the Autosport show (which shares NEC-space with our very own PistonHeads Performance Car Show) with the 225.675mph Jaguar Bonneville XFR prototype.

Spec-fiends can check out the technical details of the Jaguar RSR XK below:

Simply beautiful - nice to hear it'll be used for racing.

Bet that V8 powerplant sounds pretty sweet.

Come on jaguar! this is what people want as the next XKR-R!!!

run a tuned 5.0ltr supercharged engine that makes the same power (if not more), similar gearbox (keep it as a manual!!), keep the agressive bodywork (wing optioanl), big brakes and wheels. smile

Chris.

RSR did the Trans Am XKR as well didn't they? Shame it won't be competing over here, but we have the Apex GT3 XKR with those sweet side exit exhausts for now. Maybe a trip to Le Mans in future, but GT2 is highly competitive so they'd want to be sure of a result. New GT2-only Spa 24hrs as a warm-up?

Looking forward to seeing this at the show. Reckon they might sneak it back for an LMS round?

Meh, it's a Jag with a silly body kit, what I want to know is how can you have the American Le Mans? I mean Le Mans is in France, 60 billion lightyears from Americaland, ALMS is just 24hr racing and some sprints, where as Le Mans is Le Mans because its Le Mans.

Should of been called
The American Race Series Endurance and Sprint

It's not a 'Jag with a silly body kit', you dope. It's a GT2 car.

The ALMS has been running for years. The name allows sponsors, teams and public to make the link with Le Mans, which is obviously handy from a marketing standpoint. Plus the fact that the a fair few ALMS teams compete at La Sarthe every year. There is no 24hr round - but there is a 12-hour at Sebring and the 10-hour Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta, along with the 2hr 45min sprint races.

There's also the Le Mans Series (LMS) in Europe, which doesn't have a round in France either. Should that be renamed also? Perhaps they could use a similarly catchy title to the one you suggested above...

My MotorSport subscription goes to my dad's house so will have to wait until I see him next to pick it up. I'm not wholly surprised the Apex cars are for sale after what happened to the team. Lovely cars though.

I may be alone on this one but I think with that bodykit it looks a bit like a Mitsubishi FTO

Wash your mouth out!

Good Lord!! What ever next.

If someone over here had the will, there's no reason why a European team couldn't run a GT2 XKR. It's just soooo easy to pick up a Porker and go GT2 racing, the damn things are everywhere.

And the reason it's the American Le Man Series is because they run to ACO Rules for the classes, with a few local performance equalising tweaks, just as the LMES runs those same rules in this part of the world. It means you have a big pool of cars eligable for the great race.

I'm not 100% sure, but I seem to recall reading that it wouldn't currently be eligible for Le Mans without some changes - there are some subtle differences between the regular Le Mans and ALMS regs. Same issue with the BMW M3 GT2 car which is eligible for the ALMS but not, currently, the Le Mans 24 hours.

Not saying it won't happen though, because I vaguely recall them mentioning LM 24hour aspirations when they interviewed the team owner at the Petit Le Mans last year. But it won't be 2010.

Do you feel the same with every other GT car then? A stupid body kit, do you feel that F1 car's have silly body kits as well??

It's known as a concept, it uses the Le Mans name to bring more publicity to the sport. Only a good thing as this has some of the most exciting racing on the planet.

I believe that is because the ALMS is run / governed by IMSA under the umbrella of the ACO, allowing subtle tweaks to the ACO rule book. However in doing this some cars, most noticeably the Maserati MC12, were ineligible for le Mans. This is juxtaposed with the European le Mans Series, LMS which is run / governed directly by the ACO, consequently any car running in the LMS would technically be eligible to run in the 24 hour.
