Well yes it's a big achievement. But unless they close that gap I can see something like the 107% rule coming back for "safety" reasons.

Personally, I don't believe they will be that slow, they are just taking it cautiously, very sensible for a brand new car, can you imagine if Glock tried to banzai a lap and binned it?

remember too, that the "9 second down" lap times are probably not too far away from what the big teams were doing after lap 16. They were all starting slowly then working their way up.

This morning when Virgin were running the track was still damp from yesterdays rain.

Its a better showing then the rest of the new teams...

And comparing this with the last testing, we founf that Toro Rosso were slowest, Ferrari way out in front. Now, Toro Rosso out in front, with a Ferrari "only" 4th.

I agree, a lot of these early laps will have been installation laps and shakedown runs to root out any problems exactly like the one with the front wing mounts. They won't have been pushing things but rather will have been building their pace.

It is great to see a new team testing and I hope things improve from these tentative first steps. Even the might of Ferrari and all had to start somewhere.

I would have said that if a new team doesn't pitch up to at least 1 of the pre-season tests then they should be thrown out; they more than anyone need to test ffs!

A failure of that type really shouldn't happen at that level. You don't test to see if things are strong enough, you engineer it to be strong enough. That said I hope the new boys do well

Well said that man. My dad's involved in this project, they've made such a big achievement in having a car ready in such a short space of time and as far as I understand they are focusing on the reliability of VR-01 this time round rather than lap times. However I am biased!!

lets think this through.

out of all the teams that are currently testing, the majority have had huge budgets working flat out since last summer on the design of the 2010 cars.

virgin were one of the final teams granted a place on the grid, and, understandably, did not start work on any car in actual material form before that happened.

let us not forget the fact that they are out there, testing, regardless how many laps they do, and that campos f1 and usf1 havent even done crash tests yet, and lotus only release there car today, let alone test.

as i said before, well done to virgin f1 and all there staff, personally i would have thought even wirth himself would have expected to have teething trouble like this.

but hey ZeeTacoe, i guess you could do miles better eh.

I'd bet if I had millions of pounds worth of Branson's money my car would do more than 15 laps in 2 days of testing.
