I guess the question is more aimed at the Formula 1 calendar.
A lot of people have some fairly big views on whats happening in the sport, who's doing what and the have their favourite teams / drivers.
But how many of you get out there and watch it 'Live' with the full bore sound track?
What is it that you get from the ambience of the race circuit that you dont get at home on the sofa - Is it just the noise of the howling engines?

Never been to an F1 race. Been to Silverstone for F1 testing a few times. Would rather go to the 1000kms LMS race to spectate and intend to this year if the date works out.
Can be found at Castle Combe quite a bit, although not usually for race meetings but for sprints where I will be either marshalling or clerking (or even competing, although not recently).

I've only been to one F1 race - Monza '05. Fantastic atmosphere, on TV you can't appreciate the sound and the smell, even the colours.
The downside is that you don't get anything like as full an idea of what's going on as you do at home, even though the grandstand we were in was right across from one of the big TVs.
It's great from an 'event' point of view, less good in terms of actually following the sport.
The fact that it's villainously expensive doesn't help either.

F1 is too expensive for not enough overtaking, needs to be seen on TV so when the rare move does happen you don't miss it!
I do go to historic meetings though, didn't go to so many while in uni but usually go to maybe 10 or so race meetings a year. Mostly UK circuits but with the odd european round, like spa, thrown in.
Live racing is fantastic, race fans who havn't experienced a live race need to get down to a track, even if just for a UK club weekend, fantastic fun.

I wouldn't pay for a bad view of an F1 car when I can watch them on TV.

Totally agree - and if last fridays online lucky dips had been mine not the guy from Cirencester then I'd be looking forward to going to a fair few in the near future!In the past I've been lucky to be able to go the British GP a few times, Monaco GP once and many British circuits for touring cars etc with the Mrs, I've also been to Le Mans a few times (without her!). But apart from the cost other issues in going to see the races live is time, energy and opportunity, which sadly are limited for many much of the time.
Im getting the responses I kind of expected I guess.
Last year I went to Spa - but didnt go on race day due to the price of tickets etc, and if you stay for the weekend its all the camping / b&b costs as well that have to be taken into account.
What annoys me more than anything though (having been to whole weekends before), is that you can have a good nose about on the Friday, then on the Saturday slowly but surely you get to see less and less, as they actively block viewing points with mesh fencing etc, I guess in an attempt to make sure most people pay for a seat in a grandstand to they can see over the top.
The real joy for me is the sound of the things - but I really want to treat myself at some point and do a 'Gold' weekend with pit passes etc etc, and take in some more of the spectacle from a richer persons perspective

We went to Silverstone in 2008,the price then was fair enough £139 each for 3 days,but i would'nt pay what they are asking now,for the same seat at stowe it's now more than £100 each more.
But as for "what you get actually being there" it's the atmosphere,it was awesome,especially when it's your favourite driver that wins, Lewis in my case
.The fact that it peed it down did'nt matter,it just made it all the more memorable.

Totally. Especially with the 5 live commentary. You see and know more than you would watching on TV as I saw a near off and a near 90degree save by Grosjean at Monza 09 that tv didnt pick up on. Ive done Mangy Cours, Spa, Monza and Silverstone. I think general admission is good value at about £30 per full day of action (maybe less £/day if there is a thursday pit walk) Loved every second, you miss out on senses by just watching it on TV. The atmosphere was electric at Monza, plus walking the bank enjoying the history and the track invasion was brilliant!!!

We love it, the atmosphere is brilliant (except Turkey) and it's great mixing with other fans from different nations... having some beers and a bit of a tan. I get goosebumps when I here the cars fire up.

So then, would more people attend the races if (as the FIA claim with all the attempts at cost capping) the entrance fees were more reasonable?
