Lada's were good motors for what they were- cheap, basic reliable transportation. In fact a lot of the old ones went back to the east when they hit a low price here as they were highly desired over there, where being able to repair something or bend it straight keeps you mobile. In most of russia, especially the more rural parts, I doubt they have many stockpiles of ford and vauxhall ECU's and all the other unrepairable bits british mechanics like to replace at will in search of an elusive fault.

That said I'm not sure what they make today, or what the hell a company strictly limited in both geographical market and to building cheapo cars wants with F1, where the cost of sponsorship is justified by global brand awareness and prestige

Renault have apparently purchased 25%, maybe they want to do for Lada what VW did for Skoda?

how the hell they gonna manage that, skodas sell because they're seen as VW engineering in a brown paper wrapper, a bit of a bargain for the canny money not concerned with image. But French engineering with a budget conscious label?

we've got those here too! They seem to go downhill fast, if they are clearly more than a couple of years old, is seriously worrying! At least the Ladas are made to good old Soviet over-engineered (if basic) standards

Lada have pulled out of WTCC for 2010 and are now 25% owned by Renault.

Although their entire current range is pure unadulterated dogst the new stuff will use Renault technology, and probably be based on the Logan platform, which will at least put them in a position to stem the flood of customers leaving them for Hyundai and Chevrolet in their domestic market, before trying to hit some of the former Soviet states and other 2nd world countries.

Their plant at Togliatti is the largest car factory in the world, employs 100k people, has a capacity of 3/4m cars a year and covers 50 square miles and with some serious modernisation it could be a fantastic low cost production base for Renault-Nissan and their other brands.

it certainly does and I have personaly killed 6 of these cars at work ,

in fact theres is a 2008 model parked outside my Siberian office !! (

they cost in the region of $7000 new , the design has not changed since 1977 .

the life expectancy of the engine appears to be in the region of 80,000 km !!!

after that they fall to pieces ..........good off roader but you would not want to drive one of these on the open road , we have had 5 people killed driving these at work , about -10 NCAP rating !!!

Heater at best is ste .......ive driven one for 100km at -48c with no heater ...now that was fking cold I can tell you !!!

There really is no place for LADA in the modern world , driving one is like a life on Mars ...........aka British leyland experience.

The lada will accept a absolutely silly amount of parts from other cars. They run a lot of them in Bulgaria, (where I have family), and the main reason is easy to fix, with whatever parts you can get your hands on. If i lived out there, I'd have one, (and jack it up a bit!)

I must admit it confuses me, will they be racing as Renaults or Ladas? It seems strange that a major international car manufacturer should be sponsored by a minor player.

I think it just shows that now they are Renault in name only.
