I've been wondering how fast they'll be since the canning of refuelling. I think McLaren used to be about the fastest in pre-fuelling times. And they were circa 4-4.5 seconds back then.
It would seem that new technology on hubs, wheels and guns has brought the times down somewhat, going to be an interesting part of the strategy now if you can gain a second or two in the pits.

A friend of mine was, together with another, allowed into the Tyrell pits during a GP. A line was drawn on the floor, three steps from the front of the pits, and they were told to stand behind it until the car had come to a complete stop.
He got all excited as the pit stop approached, as did the mechanics. He took up a semi-sprinting stance, the car stopped, he took three steps forward just in time to find the car obscured by the smoke from the tyres.
It's quick.

I don't buy it, doing a quick pit stop at the factory is easy but at the track it's a whole different ball game.
Let us see how quick they are when the adrenaline is raging and someone has just tried to run them all over while stopping in the wrong place.
I think we will see sub. 3 sec stops and maybe if everything goes perfectly a sub. 2.5 sec stop but I will put money on it not being possible to do a sub. 2 sec. stop.
It won't be the team that can do the fastest pit stop that will be quickest it will be the team that makes the least mistakes during the pit stop.

DTM stops have always impressed me and they take fuel (while not much) on as well.....so I think the F1 boys should be able to go faster then that and they are around the 3 second mark.
This clip shows what seem really quite relaxed pitstops around the 3 second mark. With open wheels, more hands and no fuel, I don't see why they can't get below 3 seconds, although I note that DTM doesn't (from that evidence) seem to require the secondary fixing that we see in F1.AndrewW-G said:

DTM cars have built in air jacks, F1 cars need a front and rear mechanic to manually lift the car.
The advantage with air jacks is they are quicker, make the car more stable when off the ground and the air connection can be operated from the side.
No need to wait for the front jack mechanic to be out of the way before the car leaves the box.
At the last F1 test in Barcelona William's appeared to be one of the quickest with consistent 4.0 to 4.2 sec stops, either they are dog slow which I doubt or Red Bull are playing mind games.
Either way we will find out next weekend

A pit stop is best viewed up close – sadly not an option for most.
I was in the pitane for the first A1 GP which is not F1 by any margin but the speed, violence, noise and precision is truly awesome.
If you happen to be in the vicinity of a pit stop, make sure you stand well clear. There was a photographer I saw who quite literarily got mowed down by the crew as they ran to the car – didn’t even acknowledge he was there – just one wheelman gave him a “look” after the car had left.
The term “focused” just doesn’t come close!

I reckon it will be close to or sub 2 seconds.
In 1993 (last time refuelling was banned) Benneton were turning Patrese around in 3.2 seconds. This time around the technology has moved on and there is no 'secondary' pin to be manually placed as last year (or those horrid wheel covers thank God).
