Whilst in a holding pattern coming into Heathrow this morning I noticed a motor circuit of some type almost due north of the Millennium Dome.

It was north of the Thames and next to a golf course, and ideas which one it might have been? With my limited knowledge I'm stumped!

There are no car racing circuits in that area, the nearest is Brands Hatch to the east but thats not near enough to fit your description. I guess its possible it could be a kart circuit. I'm going to have a hunt around on google maps to see if I can spot the place you mean.

It could well be a kart circuit, it was hard to work out the scale from the air. I've had a look on Google maps and can't see anything frown

The trouble is I can't even think of any outdoor kart circuits that are in that area either. I've just been looking and I can't see anything that fits your description. There is something at one point that looks vaguely like a circuit but its just some roads.

Nope, they don't look right. I'm 90% sure it wasn't karting...

Having a look at the holding places on the routes into LHR, I think I was over Lambourne, Essex which is here. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Lambourne%2C%20Ess...redfacefficial&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl

Still none the wiser though...

Was it a proper track or an airfield outfield or something?

Aren't there a few airfield based trackdays out that way in the direction of the M11?

It looked like a proper track as it had (from what I could see) alternate layouts.

There is a disused airfield just off the M11, north of the M25 which offers track days.

There is a kart circuit in Hertford (Rye House) which is also NE London.

I doubt it was the police training college in Hendon!!

Maybe the Ford test circuit at Dunton Essex???

Is that North Weald? As I've had a look and it doesn't look right. Stableford Airfield looks similar, but again, I would have noticed the runways.

This looks close, but not right. I doesn't seem to have the different layout options.

I hate to ask but how are you so sure you know where you were? I frequently think I'm "over my house" or some other bks when I am in fact, clearly miles away.

Based on the fact I was the other side of the river from the Dome. Only passed the Olympic site after we'd come out of the holding pattern and working out which pattern I was in from doc like this

Also, Buckmore is the wrong side of the river and too far east. I'm starting to wonder if it was something other than a racing circuit, test track etc etc...

That looks like it could be the one! The shape looks very much like the one I remember, it seemed to have a 'boot' like shape at one end.
