BBC starting to realise that Legard is a PITA
Discussion
in the "classic Malaysian GP's" slot as reported in Andrew Bensons Blog

"You will notice that in two of the races - 2002 and 2003 - we have asked our F1 commentator Jonathan Legard to voice the highlights, and have blended his reportage with Martin Brundle and Ted Kravitz's analysis from the live race coverage at the time.
This is because it is our policy to only use BBC commentators on our F1 coverage, and we do not have the 5 Live commentary from those races for various reasons.
I know some of you don't like this approach, but I'm afraid there is no prospect of it changing."

on the contrary - they are giving legard even more work!
the admission that some might not like it just refers to their stupid rule about only bbc commentators being able to provide commentary on pre-recorded content. what if murray started blogging to itvf1 (still an infinitely better resource than the bbc f1 effort)? would they tape over him too>

Do they voice over Murray's ITV commentaries for the years 1996 to whenever Allen took over?
I think the replacement by later BBC commentators is more a recognition of the unpopularity of James Allen.
Exactly.I think the replacement by later BBC commentators is more a recognition of the unpopularity of James Allen.

If Allen had been popular, you can bet your bottom dollar that the BBC would have offered him a ticket for the gravy train. It is because of his unpopularity that they are doing this.
Can you imagine the outcry if the Beeb had taken Allen on? It would be worse than this.

Would that not perhaps be a contractual issue, since Murray now works for the BBC? Just a thought.Murray has worked for both ITV and BBC since his broadcasting career started in 1948. In the 1960s, he was working for ITV and BBC at the same time

The clips are from F1 Administration and do not carry any commentary.
ITV no longer own the footage (in fact, they never did "own" it, just "rented it"), only James Allen's commentary.
Thus, the clips you see are not what ITV broadcast but that which was provided to them (for a fee) by F1 Admin.
The BBC can then overlay this with whatever commentary they wish.
When you see clips with commentary by Murray and Hunt, these pre-dated the F1 ownership rights which kicked in around the time Jonathan Palmer stepped in.

Mind you, hindsight being 20/20 vision and all...

thought it was Murry/Hunt is when the BBC broadcast F1 before ITV so they will show the original BBC highlights programme, where as anything after 1994 and before the return to the BBC they will use the BBC R5 commentary over the F1 feed, in some instances they dont have the R5 commantary so they have Legard do a voice over, mixed with Martin Brudel's live contributionITV no longer own the footage (in fact, they never did "own" it, just "rented it"), only James Allen's commentary.

BBC's last sesason covering F1 was 1996 (the year Damon Hill became WDC). So the BBC TV archive will cover everything from 1978 (their 1st year of covering a full season) to 1996 inclusive.
As the years 1978 to 1980 were pre the FOCA TV deal, I wonder what the BBC have got for those years.
