F1 Driver's Work Ethic

I'm impressed by this story about Button flying back to Woking between the Malaysian and Chinese GP's to try to solve some of his setup difficulties with the car. He seems to be putting everything into his time at McLaren, and it's this attitude which will warm the team to him IMO.

What I'm not sure about is how this compares to other drivers. Is this just a non-news story as every other driver is also back at the factories, or is it truly an almighty effort that no other drivers are prepared to make?

I think Button get's a fairly rough end of the stick regarding his dedication etc. Certainly sounds like he's doing his bit with the team and taking this year seriously.

Just hope he will be a little less tentative on the track.

Well last year it was reported that Lewis and Heikki were spending a lot of time at the factory to help get the car up to speed. But when Kubica was asked whilst at BMW he just said theres nothing i can do to help. Theres also Nico Hulkenberg who spent time working at the Williams factory whilst a test driver there. But other than that it's not often reported on.

If i was world champion i would make use of every opportunity to improve myself or to understand the benefit adjustment to setup would give me. I would hate to loose that title after winning it.

I suspect he was told to to get back by his employers and test.....remember he quoted 'they wouldn't'

I read this and thought it showed dedication, then I thought, if he was really dedicated, he wouldn't just fit a day in before he spends time in Japan with his girlfriend, he would spend all the time prior to the Chinese GP at Woking.

I appreciate everyone needs time off, and I'm not just singling out Button, but the way they are presented in the media, their work approach could be improved. I thought Hamilton's visit to California prior to the Australian GP was a case in point (he even admitted he didn't have much time to adjust prior to the event).

He needs to get out to the far east as soon as he can to acclimatize and get his head together. He needs to get the car right in Woking then get himself in the right frame of mind before the race weekend. Spending a little time relaxing with his girlfriend in the same time zone as the race will be just the job

And I am sure he will be doing a LOT of training everyday. Probably more than most of us do in a month if truthe be known. And I bet he is limited to how many days he can spend in the tax haven that is (not) the UK.

I thought he actually said that going that way ropund the world worked better for him than going the other way around the world.

As regards time in the simulator I guess they cant spend too much time in it as they need to fly back to somewhere near China in plenty of time to avoid jatlag, and if they are testing changes to the car etc those bits need to be made before the race so they need time for a lead time!

WRT jet lag, I doubt any of the team who fly back to the UK this week will bother switching to UK time.

Lewis flew back on the same flight as Jake, on the day the grand prix finished.
