Apparently there will be 4 cylinder, 1.5 litre engine equipped with a twin-turbo and direct injection engine. The new formula would also involve KERS.

What do you make of this?

Did not hear/read anything about KERS, but am not surprised.
Engines will most probably have DFI

I think I saw that in Autosport last week. I also read something by Sam Michael somewhere saying anything less than 650bhp would make them too easy to drive, thought the specs for 1.5litre 4 pot turbo and KERS was pretty good. He also said it was a different kind of KERS, can't remember the details, didn't seem particularly earth shattering news. 4 pot turbo 2.0 was on the cards when Mosley proposed his world engine.

They are too easy anyway, you hardly see any mistakes due to the amount of power the cars have even from rookies in the first time they have ever sat in the car. (HRT at the first race)

Aero and Mechanical grip has increased due to the brlliant engineers despite FIA efforts to bring it down, yet power has stayed the same or decreased, going down more is not the answer.

I still think modern F1 cars need 1000+hp to sort the men from the boys. 650 is nothing for what should be just about the top 20 drivers in the world.

I know engines are terribly expensive but isn't a lot more time and money spent on aerodynamic stuff? I sure wish they could find a way to open up their options a bit in the engine department without having a huge cost runup race. It's like a bad dream this mandated cylinder count business. On the other hand if it brings back the e30 M3 it may be worth it.

If they are supposed to be interested in costs, why change? Huge additional R&D spend for no tangible return - just daft. Like every other engine regulation since they started mandating the number of cylinders... rolleyes

look at the money (wasted) on KERS (with zero relevance to roadcars)

+1

This is what annoys me.

We're making it cheaper!
P.S. Change your fuel tanks, it may cost loads but it'll make the racing better... probably.

We're still cutting costs.
P.S. Did I tell you about the diffuser ban next year? That'll be pretty cheap so don't worry.

And whilst we're cutting costs, we're going one further, we're going to save the planet too.
Completely new engines. Oh and with KERS, yeah sorry you spent quite a bit getting it done for one season. It'll be like that, but you'll probably have to design it from scratch because we're going to change the technicalities.

Yours sincerely,
The FIA.

Not really true that KERS, as such, has no relevance to road cars.

What is true is that road cars were and are years ahead of F1 in terms of KERS systems anyway.

kind of different goals F1 vs. road use.

To be honest I don't know why they don't just put the rule book in the bin, cars must be 3,5 mtrs x 1.5mtr weigh no more less than 600kg and all power plants to breather through a 40mm restrictor.

that's it

you'd have cars capable of turning the drivers into goo

They should give the KERS boost buttons to random people in the crowd.

The end of the article contradicts the start so much. He basically says that F1 cars are already perhaps the greenest part of running a team (in CO2 emissions bks) yet they want to push for greener engines? The FIA in contradicting themselves/not making their mind up shocker, who'd have thought it?
