Marshalling/work in the summer

Im 18y.o., live in london and im free from 11th July to 05th August. I would love to get into the world of motorsport, but i have no prior hands on or direct experience. Is there any possibility of me getting some work experience in the summer, maybe even at the British GP, in or close to London? And what is my best way of finding anything?

If you are interested in marshalling pop over to the Marshals Forum on www.ten-tenths.com and you'll find lots of info there, you're not far away from Brands Hatch presumably? You should find someone who'll buddy up with you to help you along.

Marshalling is voluntary and unpaid, it will help you to demonstrate a commitment to motorsport but it aint going to pay your way. You can't rock up at a circuit now and marshal the BGP, you start as a trainee and then work towards a grade and the BGP is by invitation but no trainees are permitted.

As for working at the BGP you're best chance is one of the catering suppliers who hire loads of hospitality staff, maybe not what you had in mind though...

Contact Brands Hatch and ask if they have any jobs going like traffic waving and stuff. I know it sounds boring but it isnt, gives you a totally new perspective on events and you get to see behind the scenes

Tbh I think the idea of getting a job as a gate steward etc is probably the best as marshalling or anything else is going to take more commitement then your month or two.

An idea for something to get into maybe time keeping? you start off as a trainee but can work up through the ranks until you (eventually) are running race meetings yourself, if you're really good and committed even travel the world doing F1.. some of the positions are paid and others you can get expenses. But again its not something you can do in a couple of weeks, plus time keepers have the best view in the house and they are warm

Wiscombe Park has the very epitome of the ancient caravan for the timekeepers, how that green thing is still in one piece I'll never know, I think it's older than me!

At Castle Combe the best view in the house is reserved for course control, at least at sprints ever since we got Les to run an extension to the aerial wire up to the birds nest at the start of last year so we could move the radio base station up a floor - they now use it for their own race meetings as well I understand. We even have CCTV showing the start line at the pit lane exit.
