Just watched some old F1 coverage with Mr Allen commentating, and, well, it actually seemed better!
i know i feel dirty by admitting it, but at least he put some effort in frown

Wasn't a massive fan of James Allen at the time, but much prefered him to Legard!
Does anyone else sit and shout 'SHUT UP!' at the telly when Legard goes off on one of his boring monologues? I reckon I do, 3 times per race on average. rolleyes

What has been heard cannot be unheard. For that one moment alone I wish him terminal laryngitis.

No Allen was awful.

Legard is almost as bad though. I just wish he'd stop talking for a bit sometimes. When you listen to the Ant and Crifty show, you realise how mindnumbingly appalling he really is.

Bring back Murray!

I really need to change the commentary feed to Radio 5 Live for the next GP, I haven't tried that yet but I really enjoy their practice commentary.

If only for his "look at all those caaaaaars !" comment James Allen should stay quiet forever.

Both are terrible. Legard doesn't know when to shut up, and I don't know if anyone else has picked up on the way he says certain words, like 'yesterDAY'.

Never, David Croft, Anthony Davidson and/or Maurice Hamilton are better.

Red button, change audio. The only annoyance is the update every 10 laps and the news headline every half hour, but at least it's a bit of excitement in a dull race.

For sure (sorry)! I really enjoy the banter between Ant and Crofty, you can tell they get along and even when theres nothing happening on circuit, they can make it watchable with some insight or story. The Brundle/Leggard chemistry is non existent on the other hand.

No. I press the red button and change to the Five Live commentary, or the CBBC one, because I'm not daft enough to sit there being annoyed by something that I know might annoy me.

As it happens, I don't mind Legard. But every now and again I'm not in the mood for his particular brand of commentary, and it's Red Button time.

Keeping on topic, I remember when James Allen was the pit reporter in the Murray Walker days and he was genuinely good at that. I think it was mistake to move into commentary, but its an obvious aspiration.

God no don't bring back Murry he was cute but bloody awfull, JA i couldn't stand ,,, till i heard legard!! frown
Having said that if your back is too the TV (say while sufing the net and re-watching/listening to the race) it's actually quite good, so it's Crofty and Ant for me next race and leggy and MB for the 2nd re-watch later that night wink

He's been doing some excellent journalism recently... But he was unforgivably annoying as a commentator. At least Legard is bland and ignorable.

+1

The only reason I don't go to Radio 5 commentry is because I really like listening to Brundle. But as we know that means having to get annoyed at Legard and his constant inability to understand whats going on in the race, who is who, race strategies, talking over people, not looking at whats being displayed on screen etc etc etc etc.....

IMO the BBC have really done a great job of the GP coverage since they have taken over and I for one am hugely thankful............BUT.....................the sooner they get rid of Legard the better.

I loved Walker.

He told me nothing about the race, but entertained me instead. I dont need comentators to tell me whats going on, I usually spot it before Leggy does, I know more about it than Leggy does and when I dont know something or miss something Brundle invariably picks it up for me. So Leggy/Allen are irrelevent to me.

Walker was pure entertainment.

Atleast when Allen asked Brundle a question he'd let him answer, Leggard reels off a list of multiple choice answers then answers the question himself.

Could you imagine being stuck in a commentary booth for 5 hours every other weekend with the chap?
Good thing he doesn't commentate during free practice else I'll end up watching F1 for hours on mute.
