Basically he reckons that because USF1 failed, its not possible to start a new team? Somebody better tell the others. The USF1 plan was drawn up in early 2009; they had plenty of time to get things sorted. Lotus had less than half the time USF1 did and made a half decent job of it.

I have no doubt the USA has the talent to succeed in F1, however most of it is in Indycar/NASCAR etc. Surely Ganassi, Penske, Hendrick, Richard Petty Motorsports or Andretti Green Racing could produce a decent stab at cracking F1?

I'm sure they could; but you'd have to ask yourself why on earth would they? There's a huge market that they have sewn up, as it were, American sponsors left right and centre with a huge American audience.

F1 the sport would need to be big in America for them to consider it, rather than just having one US grand prix a year that the US sponsors would care about?!

That article is journalism clutching at straws, asking the monkey questions, rather than the organgrinder.

That aside, if any team were to be sold anytime soon, I would expect it to be either Force India (because of Del-Boy's lack of real money) or Torro-Rosso (who have been for sale since they were taken over).

AIUI, Hurley was interested in F1 as it's a motorsport that reaches a Global audience.

Indycar and Nascar, whilst popular, are essentially domestic motorsport series'.

So, if Penske, Ganassi or Andretti were to get a global partner, it would be very worth their while to consider F1.

For all it's faults, F1 is known across the world and is very popular in Europe and Asia. Add an American GP into the mix and you have a platform to reach most of the world.

I thought the same thing; it is a truly global sport (F1). But from America's reluctance to adopt it - either with teams, or by hosting grand prix, it makes me think they don't see value in it. Or rather, they see more value in keeping it a home market.

What's the global audience for F1, I wonder, versus the motorsport audience in USA?

I think the possible 'teams for sale' goes beyond the obvious (Toro Rosso).

Renault F1 are owned by venture capitalists now. I could see them wanting to switch their branding to sister company Nissan with US backing, as the states are such an important market for Nissan.

A US funded Nissan powered team - based in Enstone?

or.....

What do we think about Williams long term plans? I'm sure Frank and Patrick must be thinking about an exit strategy, and their team could be a great base for a new investor in F1.

Can only speak for myself,

But I'd be really upset to see the end of Williams.
The history & enjoyment that that team has provided to the sport over the years would make it a big loss.

Williams long term plan and exit strategy? Did I miss something? They aren't going anywhere. Williams ARE an F1 team, only an F1 team, and nothing more. Not a car firm with a product awareness budget. Not an equity firm with money to invest. Not a playboy millionaire who wants his fat ugly mush on the telly. Outside of F1 they are nothing.

I think he meant the main people in the team are getting on a bit and may be thinking about retirement

I'm sure all the chassis for US open wheeled race cars (Indy & Kart) are made in this country. Can someone verify but I think Lola make Kart chassis.
So the US don't really have the expert knowledge needed for building a good F1 car

The Indycar is built by Dallara in Italy, used to be Lola years ago I think. CART doesn't run any more, its just Indycar series. The engine is a Honda one but is actually built by Ilmor.
There definitely is the talent somewhere in America to build a winning chassis, just the USF1 project was run by monkeys. Surely the Indycar teams could give it a go? Penske were in F1 from 1974-76, a long time ago I know, and they didn't set the world alight, but surely they have the knowhow to compete in modern F1? Also while we are on the subject of Penske, does anyone know if they have some sort of linkup with McLaren? Just seems weird that they shared the same colour scheme when they were Marlboro backed (I know Marlboro had a lot to do with that, but the Ferrari Marlboro colours were totally different) and the new Verizon colour scheme on the 2010 Penske Indycars does look similar to the old West McLaren scheme; surely this isn't just a coincidence?

They do now have other interests outside F1 though. They own the flywheel technology company that developed their KERS system and was in the Hybrid Porsche that damn well nearly won the Nurburgring 24 Hours this year.

They have also dabbled in engineering special projects for major manufacturers in the past.

I agree about not being playboy millionaires though. smile

There is no one in the US capable of building a winning chassis because if they were any good they would be doing it now but for a European based team. Now if you you wanted a chassis that could compete in F1 but at the lower half of the grid then yes I'm sure there must be someone that could but only if they had a good group of senior designers and engineers with current F1 design experience backing them up.

I'm not bashing the US as I wish someone would set up a US team and make a success of it.

One thing that everyone is missing here is Chad Hurley's interest in a US based US funder US F1 team. Not a European F1 team flying the Stars & Stripes.

What get's me is that USF1 failed because of funding issues, yet the man with more than enough money was part of that, and wants to be part of this new idea.

None of the existing US based teams want to do F1. While it may be global, there isn't the interest in the US to back it properly.

More people know the name of Jimmie Johnson's gas can holder than know who won the F1 Driver's Championship last year, let alone who won the 2009 Indy 500!!!

NASCAR is soo big that everything else is "club racing" by comparison.

I appreciate that they wanted to start a 100% US team, but if a company like BMW with all their knowledge and experience struggle, USF1 should have taken smaller steps to become 100% US, Lola offered them a chassis which they should have taken. After a few years of learning they could have phased out the foreign parts, help and people and fulfilled their dream of 100% US. But to go from nothing to competing in the technologically toughest motor sport in one go was a bit arrogant, then again they were American.
