Webber To Stay At Red Bull For 2011

F1 points leader continues with Red Bull, despite Turkish GP controversy

The Red Bull F1 team has officially re-signed Mark Webber for next season. Since Sebastian Vettel is already under contract with Red Bull for next year, the move shores up Red Bulls line-up for 2011.

Ordinarily, signing up a driver who has got you four poles and two wins out of seven races - and leads the drivers' points table - would be a no-brainer. But the crash at the Turkish Grand Prix between the two Red Bull cars, which put Vettel out of the race and pushed Webber down to third, must have made for a tense and murky atmosphere at Red Bull.

Until last Thursday, when the team met for a 'clear the air' meeting to draw a line under the incident, blame for the crash had been laid at Webber's door. That meeting absolved Webber, but Vettel is refusing to accept blame - though many observers think it was at least partly his fault.

"You do at the time what you think is right, and in that case you would do it again because you thought it was right," he told the BBC. "I had already passed Mark and then tried to come slowly back to the right. At that time I was the leading car and then usually the leader dictates where to go. We made contact and that was the end of the race for me."

But despite obvious intra-team tensions, Webber is clrearly chuffed to be staying at Red Bull: "The decision to extend for a further year was a mutual one; it's widely known that I'm not interested in hanging around in Formula One just for the sake of it and at this stage of my career, I'm happy to take one year at a time.

"I continue to feel very comfortable here - I have a fantastic relationship with the whole team and the factory at Milton Keynes feels like home. It's been incredible to be part of the team as it's moved forward from a mid-field competitor to one that is challenging for the Championship."

"The decision to retain Mark was very straightforward. He is an important member of our team and is currently in the best form of his career, as the current leader of the Drivers' Championship," said team principal Christian Horner. "The team is extremely happy that the driver pairing of Mark and Sebastian will remain unchanged for a third season in 2011."

Good news, but now the question is are they going to offer Vettel a seat, or will he be replacing a MercPetronas driver in 2011?

Well deserved and hard earned in my opinion. He's had to raise his game to match Vettel and now looks like a potential world champion.

Also, "this moves shores up..."

Doesn't make sense. You could use either "these moves shore up..." or "this move shores up..."

This happened last August:
Quote: 'Sebastian Vettel is to stay with Red Bull for at least another two years after negotiating a new contract.
The 22-year-old, third in this year's world championship with seven races to go, has signed a new deal until the end of 2011, with an option for 2012.'
and recently they (the team) were looking for another extension - till 2015

Is it just me that thought the crash was 100% Vettels fault?

I'd be livid if the blame was passed on to me.

On different sites it is something like 80-90% of those who participate in polls blame Vettel.
You are not alone wink

No I thought so too, but there wasn't much in it, at those speeds in that confined a space it wouldn't take much to make an accident happen.

I'd say Webber could have threatened to leave over this saying he had a contract from another team and that if they wanted him to stay on that it was now or never.

100% his fault, though not out-and-out reckless or anything, just his mistake. Shame he hasn't accepted that really.

Vettel makes mistakes that is not the mark of a champion driver, had Hamilton or Button been his partner his errors would have clearly placed him as second driver by now, he also does not own up to his errors, which suggest a lack of ability in this area.

Come one, people, stop spanking the over-roasted Turkey; or at least keep it within the Turkish GP thread, not this one.

Good on Mark. He deserves the extension.

Yep, also agree it's Vettels fault. If he wanted to overtake imo he should've been focussed on breaking late heading towards the top of the corner which would pressure Weber to move out, instead of just turning right to force a crash/evasive maneuver

Definitely Vettel's fault. He tried to test Webber to see if he would budge, and he didn't. His accident to avoid, not Webber's.

I saw a report that showed on the telemetry that Webber deliberately turned his car slightly as vettel came in to overtake to run him out of road then held the line to close him out. I agree though Vettel should never have pulled across, but as Webber had burned to much fuel racing the Maclarens he should have let Vettel through anyway as he was much slower. I think it was 6 of one and half a dozen of the other however most blame lies with the team for letting it happen at all, they should have told Webber Vettel was hot and had more fuel etc, and RECOMMENDED he let him through :-), but as a Button supporter it worked out okay for him anyway LOL

Its the teams responsibility to control those situations, look at Hamilton and Button they had a go it got a bit hairy and the management stepped into make it all sensible again and stop it getting silly, that was the 3rd lap in a row Vettel had a look coming into that corner, it was obvious he was going to try it as he was under immense pressure from Hamilton who was driving a blinder all day, and was going to pass Vettel otherwise.

No. Wrong. It's the driver's responsibility to make sure he doesn't turn in on his team-mate.

End of.

There is no other way to look at it. If Vettel had to do that to get past (and ended up taking himself out in the process) then he should have backed out of the move and tried later in the lap/on the next lap.

Hamilton and Button had a go, both of the moves were fair and they didn't take eachother out.

If Hamilton was going to catch the RBs and if the team treats the drivers equally, then it doesn't matter who is in 1st and who is in 2nd. What matters is the 2nd place driver makes it more difficult for Hamilton to get through.

It's not rocket science, but I can supply a NASA badge if you would like?
