What pre '88 donor car to go racing with?

I'm looking for a donor car to build into a race car to compete in the Hong Kong Classic Car race series ran at Sepang in Malaysia.
I've just come across the richest seam of interesting donor car's I've ever seen. They're all in Malaysia and mainly Jap stuff, but with a splattering of Volvos and BMWs etc. This seems to be the main site: www.mudah.my

Mk1 MR2 is a good suggestion, or the AE86 Corolla (aka Sprinter or Levin) which shares the same engine. Or how about an old Skyline?

Could also consider a turbo Bluebird, Starion, Lancer GSR, RX7 and so on... spoilt for choice really!

Since they already turbo engines fitted. In fact, it looks like they do love putting big engines into pretty much anything.
There's loads of ace choices there - I saw a jag XJ with a toyota supra engine, an XR4i, a capri, alfas, and loads of other cool things that would make ace cars. All pretty cheap too.

I think the most competitive of the cars will be the Xr41, and could be made classy, would run in Class B, competitive cars there are a 260Z, E30M3, RS2000 and a couple of 3 liter 911 in fast road spec. The XR4 would look great, the guy wants 2500 pounds for it, (you’d get it for 2 easy) cage say 300 pounds seat and belt 100 pounds, 50 for extinguisher and 50 for cut out etc and be ready to race, biggest problem would be the 108 PCD wheels, you need to bring these from the UK, (they are rare here, I sold the 3 sets I had over lunch last week), but convert to 114.5 and this car would be great, engine should be easy enough to keep tuned. (I reckon you could get that competitive and classy looking for 4,500 to 5000 Pounds). And it would be road legal, so you could drive to the track, which makes storage cheaper, road tax and insurance would be around 500 pound a year, as the 2.8 liter would attract high road tax.
Jap cars are cheap and fun, anything with a ‘twin cam’ can be made quick here. But remember the originality rules, (you can down load the regs from the Sepang site), if you run a non original or turbo engine you go into class C, rest are cc weight related.
Think about the Class you want to enter,
Class O will cost a fortune to compete in, the top Lotus, Porches and TVRs are very fast,
Class A is open for competition, but it would be relatively a lot of money to build a competitive car a the top Minis are very special, ( 1400 cc % speeds etc) but for me the class A car lack the speed to appeal on the long straights,
Class C is quick and good fun for the money, but my Turbo Phoenix is going to win that next year so save your efforts, (always providing my bank manager agrees, as I can’t do it on skill),
Class R would be mega expensive to win as there are 3 GT40’s running in it ,
So for me look for something in class B.
By the way I am looking at the MK1 Cortina on the weekend, if I buy it I am thinking about dropping an Essex V6 in.

You'll be surprised what your bank can support with mechanics costing 5 pound an hour.
One thing to watch out for is cars in Labaun or Langkawi, like the 260 and the Capri they can not be brought into main land Malaysia as they are not duty paid.
I've asked my race mechnic to work out an hourly rate for work and monthly rate for car storage, he has just taken a new place on 20 minutes from Sepang and has room to rent for storage, so I'll Pm you that detail when I get it. But labour is cheap, to give you an idea we can get a mechanic and say 3 helpers to the track for support for around 250 pound, split it between a few cars and it cheap as chips,
It cost nothing to get a car striped, then pay for the skilled guy to do the welding and then get it put back together. A complet respray is 400 pounds, for a good one, including the prep and mask up, a cheap one is under 200 pounds, so you don't know what you can do until you get a price, I am going to post some pictures of the carious cars in the HKCC race classes, but I need a faster conection.
You will be part of the 'Honky' group so you wont want a crapy car I can assure you.
We rekon you can but a E30 M3 in Japan, cut it in half, ship to Malaysia, reshell using a E30 shell (properly with the wheel arches and high boot) and get road legal and race prepered for under 10,000 pounds, one has been done, see the picture in the Asia section, AFOS. Restorations are cheap here, I know I've done 3. Have alook at motortrader.com.my, modified cars.

What are the regs on engine changes within the championship? I've got a spare S54 BMW engine, box and diff from my other race car. Shoehorn that into a e30 body and away we go.will_968 said:

Old Mustang shape Corolla? Datsun 1600? Or are you keen for a BMW model?

I think something Jap will be the sensible option. I know very little about pre '88 Jap stuff though so am a little in the dark about what good options might me.No real BMW preference. Already got one as it was the most economical way to get into something to race in the class I wanted to run in.
Fancy a Datsun 240Z if I could find one. I'm a big 365 GTB/4 fan and think the 240Z is a similar, very pretty design.

Something Jap would add some authenticity and retro-cool I reckon, yeah.
Old jap car modding and racing is popular in Oz, maybe look there. The 240Z wont be that light, will it?
