Ok, the 1991 race. After the finish, Nigel stops to give Ayrton a lift. Check out the lout who runs onto the straight with a Union flag and pulls a mooner just after the Williams has driven past him, only to be congratulated by his moron mate.

Got to keep your sense of humour with these things. There's always more than one wally around It's like the crowd from one of the free World Series by Renault races.

F1 at Brands Hatch... Brilliant. Little bit rough round the edges. Wonderful.

Edit - Only sad bit really is that they even had 100 bhp more than today back in Brands Hatch days. Progress eh??

On the flip side it is that progress which means that the cars are faster today, but need less power to be faster.Edited by Fire99 on Thursday 8th July 10:10

The first Brands Hatch race (1982?) why did some cars not have a front wing?
Silverstone has changed massively in twenty years hasn't it.
I wonder if the 2010 cars could lap the Brands Hatch GP circuit in under a minute now? For reference Mansell did a 1.09 in his Williams Honda.
By 1982, most of the cars were running ground effect sidepods (although the ground rubbing sliding skirts which had been part of the sidepod system had been restricted for 1982). With so much downforce being generated with the car underbody and sidepods, it was often better to do away with the front wing. Wings are actually a relatively inefficient method of creating downforce as they create a fair amount of aerodynamic drag.Silverstone has changed massively in twenty years hasn't it.

Whether a car ran with or without front wings was usually down to driver choice. In the infamous 1982 San Marino GP, one Ferrari ran with a front wing, the other one didn't.
Downforce generating sidepods were banned from 1983 onwards so front wings came back with a vengeance that year and have remained a very important feature of downforce generation ever since.
