Classic Modifieds, a new classic car formula, will hold its inaugural race meeting at Swaffham Raceway’s ‘Festival of Speed Weekend’ in Norfolk on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th July. Cars set to make their oval racing debut at the event include modified versions of time-honoured favourites such as Ford Anglias, Escorts, Cortinas and a Morris Minor 1000.
Classic Modifieds is a brand new and unique racing formula that includes a mixture of cars pre-dating 1966 which have been modified in line with certain rules and which all run on Ford V6 Essex or Cologne engines. Designed for the true enthusiast, the formula encourages amateur petrol-heads to build and modify their own racers in a way that that makes the cars as evenly matched as possible whilst keeping costs down. As well as similar engines, all cars must use the same tyre type, run on standard gearboxes and have live axles with locked diffs. Organisers want to see a truly diverse line-up on the starting grid, so a limit of five identical cars per season has been applied, e.g. 5 Escorts, 5 Anglias and so on.
Drivers are encouraged to give their cars the ‘1970s’ look, inspired by America’s Ministox and Modifieds racers, with historically-correct sign-writing and NASCAR-style numbering on the doors and roof. The cars may have grass roots origins, but they still need to be attention-grabbing and smartly-finished!
The overall aim of Classic Modifieds is to see a return to the halcyon days of racing before the ‘open cheque book’ culture took over motorsports. Think cheap cars built by hand, close and exciting racing, drivers helping each other out in the pits and a genuine driver-crowd rapport.
The Festival of Speed will be held at Swaffham Raceway on Saturday 11th July at 6:30pm and on Sunday 11th July at 1pm. Further Classics Modifieds race meetings will take place at Swaffham in August, September and October 2010. More information, including race dates and vehicles rules and specifications, can be found at www.classicmodifieds.co.uk.
