Does anyone remember, around 1970, a race of F1 team managers in Excorts around Brands? I definitely remember Frank Williams and Chapman and probably Cooper and Brabham as well. I can still see them banging doors around Paddock.

I seem to think it was a race on the Saturday of the British GP in 1970.

Sorry to be so vague. I've just put something of James' Allen's blog and a couple of mates have emailed me saying that I'm dreaming. One said I was confusing it with the time I was abducted by aliens.

Anyone remember it?

Remember it, not in the sense that I was there but I have definitely seen pictures of it around on the 'net!

...

A quick google turned up a link to PH and onwards to Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHTqivVJsMU

You're not dreaming, it did happen, and if my memory serves me correctly, which it might not, Jack Brabham won it. There might have been a lot of bodywork damage too........

Thanks for that, getns. I would have been quicker but I had a couple of urgent emails to send to those who thought I was making it up.

Funny I remember Chapman leading. Perhaps he won? I don't know.

I remember it being in colour though.

Thanks again chaps. It was a very violent race.

Wasn't that the time when Brands had a number of Escorts (perhaps belonged to the school) that they used regularly for celebrity races. I seem to remember Nicholas Parsons totalling one at Clearways once.

I think after the F1 manager's race John Webb said he wouldn't let them loose in them again, it cost him too much money in bent motor cars.

they also did it with 3.0 capri's I think before the escort had come out, its also on you tube.

would love to see the same thing today, give them a grid full of hot hatches and see what sort of race they have (Renault could provide them with some tasty cars)

Bit before my time but last year my Dad spotted an advert (in PH classifieds) for one of the Escorts and they'd included a write up of the race in the advert. I don't remember who won but in the email back to my Dad I commented that Chapman obviously could drive a bit and wasn't it ironic that it was his car that let him down given Lotus's reputation... Also said that Brabham must have been on eof the few people to self-disqualify themselves from a race win but can't remember what the story was, sorry!

Thanks for that. As you say the irony!

You realise though that it makes it even more intriguing.

Did they not do it one year using tractors?

Seem to recall the black bits were hardly used - straight across the grass !!

Frank Williams stayed in front of Max Mosley for fourth place (you’d have thought Max was chasing him for cheques)
