Havin seen Schumacher's performance's so far this season and the talk from Merc's about next year, what if he does become a championship contender in 2011...and wins!

What would the reaction be?

Interested what you think.

Complete Astonishment - not sure how he would finish ahead of Rosberg though if Merc can get the car upto speed.

Agreed. If Mercedes can give Rosberg and Schumacher a car capable of winning a championship, my money certainly wouldn't be on Schumacher

Personally I'm going to have a long hard evil laugh at the expense of all those idiots who had "Michael Schumacher - 7 x WDC" tatooed on their idiot bodies.

Becuase they'll design the 2010 car to suit his driving style, which Rosberg will find a complete pig to drive, like like all the times they did that at Ferrari and Benetton with Schumacher, maybe?

even if they bulit the car around him, he clearly lacks the speed and ability to match alonso, hamilton, button et al.... whilst the car will help him get closer to the front, i dont think he has the implicit driving skill anymore

I'm not entirely certain how you can come to that conclusion to be honest.

He has been basically out of an F1 car for a fair while and not only do things change, but the car would not have been built with him in mind.

I do think the 2010 season is more of his 'rookie' season again and 2011 will give us a fair idea.

Just IMHO of course!!

Much as I don't like him, I don't think you ever lose your "implicit driving skill"

It's just a case of some cars being more suited to you than others.

I think it's a case of Schumacher having a car that he jumped into in January having had no input into it, no testing to change it and him not liking it.

If they build him a good car that suits his style, I have no doubt that he'd have the speed.

It probably wouldn't stop him cheating though wink

Well mattikake would have to make another video to blow away all his smoke.

The driver's reactions would be brilliant. I'd love to hear the younger drivers justify their salary if they were beaten by a middle-aged man with a bad neck.

Following on from this, Button basically claimed IIRC that the car would never properly suit Mick because of the fact that the car was designed around him (with whom Rosberg shares a similar driving style, but opposite to Mick's) because of the obvious thought than Jens would stay with them!

I'm really sorry mate, but I've read that 4 times and still don't really know what you're saying!!

If you would be kind enough to re-phrase, that would be fantastic.

I tire of this talk about this being "Michael Schumacher's Rookie year", "he's had a long time out of F1" "the car doesn't suit his style" etc. He took the F1 world by storm in his real rookie year in two cars that weren't designed around him, Kobayashi did it in his rookie year. If Schumacher really had the fire and the passion he'd be driving the pants off Rosberg (as predicted by the pre-season PH wisdom).

It's time to stop making excuses for the man. He's a journeyman, employed for the image that he brings, not the results.

well i am slightly cheating as i have done a lot of research based on decision making analysis in various areas and hope to apply this research in the motor racing genre soon but i think it is possible to lose implicit skills, or at least its possible to watch them deteriorate over time. younger, faster drivers will have made him start to doubt his ability, as will a run of poor qualifying and finishing results in comparison to expectaions so i think its fair to say that he is hurting at the moment. he can blame this on the car as much as he likes but the incident with rubens showed that he cant cut it.

that was nothing to do with the car, that was just him accepting that he couldnt beat this guy in a straight fight and needing to do something else to try and stay ahead. we assume that he still has the same ability he had 15 years ago but i dont think its anything like the same, because he was good then, he is good now is implied but its clearly evident that its not the case as with some of his actions this year.

a car bulit around him will mask the deterioration of his driving ability, he is still fast dont get me wrong, in equal cars, probably one of the top eight on the grid but if you were to comapre his time with the guy fastest (if it wasnt him!) as a percentage, it will be greater today than in say, 1995, 2000, and 2005...

The answer is quite simple. His action/reaction times are slower because he is too old now.

But at times still quicker than 19 of the other competitors. Brawn, Jenson, Rosberg and Schumacher have all blamed the car. No doubt though Rosberg has got more out of it. Rosberg does seem more consistent throughout a race, generally though we don't see many overtaking moves from him. According to Brundle, Schumacher has gained the most places of anybody at race starts this season, but then for one reason or another seems to fall back. So there is still something there.

It's was very late at night for me hehe

tl;dr:

Button said the '10 car was designed around him (who shares a driving style with Rosberg) which means a planted rear end and washy front end apparently. Schumacher though has a preference for basically the opposite so he can't really get the car doing what he wants which probably is part of the reason when the car was Michael's way he was faster (because it didn't suit Rosberg).

I need more energy late at night it seems, problem if I'm doing Britcar...

Yes, he can still drive well enough, but has lost his 'edge' now he is a bit older.
