No smoke Diesels.....

Not sure if this is the right section or not.
But I went and watched the Le Mans Series at Silverstone at the weekend, and the TDI's really impressed. Not just in terms of speed, or the fantastic noise they make. But the fact they didn't look like diesels. Not a single puff of black smoke did I see from any of the LM diesels.
How do they get such a smog free exhaust and still huge power?

Yep, and as mentioned they have particulate filters to achieve that.But....
They are now noisier than they were originally - the R10 was noticeably more quiet than the R15 and the 908 - and smoke was seen at Le Mans, particularly as they crested the hill under the Dunlop Bridge, but none of the cars was flagged or penalised. Suggests that the particulate filters are a little smaller than they were originally, presumably in the chase for more performance ?
Becasue it isn't really Diesel. It's race fuel that has a compression ignition element. It's a load of BS and I believe completley unfair on the teams running Petrol/Gasoline.
I once saw an Audi mechanic spill some of their 'Diesel' in an LMES Pitlane, it evaporated as fast as brake clean and left no oily residue.... when was the last time you saw Diesel do that?

t itself.And the thing stopping the other teams using Diesel is that they buy customer engines and there aren't any diesel customer engines and they don't have the might of the VAG or PSA group to develop there own 'Diesel' engine.
I bet that if the Petrol teams decided to start running on Av Gas, Kerosene or some such other fuel Audi and Peugoet would go mental..... because of course they dont gain any advantage from their fuel.

I certainly don't go with that opinion. I don't have enough fingers or toes to count the number of very modern diesels that puff black smoke when a large boot of throttle is deployed.It's the particle filters indeed.
The Cat converters on diesels work differently to petrols, in a way they are vastly cleaner for the environment. However, as you may remember ALL older diesels loved kicking out black, soot - often under intense acceleration.
The particle filters (FAP, for Pug / Renault) are in place to prevent as much soot as possible from getting out of the exhaust system. They are either upstream, or downstream or even contain a Cat converter within the whole unit. They measure the amount of grams in the particle filter and then once the amount is considered excessive it will "regenerate".
Some sytems use a full addative, some do not. But the pre-heater plugs are force fed, extra fuel is injected and temperatures rise excessively...part burning off, part recirculating this soot at such high temperatures it's more efficeintly burnt and thus - no dirty black smoke and nice shiny diesel exhaust systems for all!
It's relatively new technology - as is common rail diesel...I personally really like Diesel power. I still love revs, but you can go as fast uphills as you can downhill (or so it feels).
