Yes, I enjoyed the racing action content... By the way, the A34 is a road ~ Brundell drove an Austin A35 splendidly and yes he sure did make that car go well.

An Austin A95 westminster won the race IIRC. I'm old enough to remember seeing cars like that on our roads every day .... back in my schooldays. The Sports and GT racers put on a good show too ~ I did see some of those in real race action too back in the day.

Brundle's always been great to watch at Goodwood.

Sadly the world of historic racing seems to be getting a bit murky and with minimal scrutineering and deep pockets, some cars seem to go a lot better than they used to. A friend of mine was racing in the Madgwick Cup and was told that the Lola Mk1 on pole had lapped 10 secs faster than in it ever did in period...

What happened to send Newey into his crash?
No replays shown, just the end of the initial incident, after a wheel had fallen off.

Don't think it was Newey driving at the time, otherwise it would make 2 crashes in almost as many weeks.... Ginettas at Snetterton IIRC. Looked like a wheel came off.

You are right, it was Bobby Rahal behind the wheel of Newey's E-Type.

I guess either of those guys can afford the repair bill.

But to be fair, I think race engineering has moved on a long way since the sixties. People will know more about how to set a car up, engines can be re-built to much finer tolerances than they ever were in the sixties too. 10 seconds does seem a lot though.

+1 for the Brundle pedalling. I used to be taken shopping in my aunties A35!

The scruntineering issue has been around a while now.

The 2 prime examples are the E-Types and ERA 5b. Massively quicker now than they were in period, they have been effectively continually developed.

Add to that the tyre tec is a World apart and if the track has been resurfaced...

I am concerned at the apparently lax attitude taken to technical, as opposed to historical, eligibility.

That was no standard A35! They, like the Morris Minor 1000 with which they shared an engine (948cc 'A' Series), and the Standard Ten, they had about 34BHP off the shelf. That one was c.100bhp. There was one, maybe that one, at the Kop Hill Climb on the 25/26th September and that was 100bhp too - went like the clappers compared with your uncle's car.

I don't think there was any TV footage of it, but we were very close to Rahal's accident. You could see a wheel nut fly off, hit the tarmac and bounce up in the air towards the spectator banking, then the wheel was off and the whole thing was heading towards the tyres. I seem to recall that Lightweight has had a smach before at Goodwood...

While the pace of development in historics is mostly not to be applauded, I actually rather like the idea that the ERAs are still (very slowly) being developed. It seems in-keeping with what Mays was all about.
