I agree - it's not cocky at all.
Was it Webber who, early on in the season, said "Schumacher is not seen as a threat - he's seen as a trophy".
EVERYONE wants to overtake Schumacher to say they have done. Can't blame them!
But Lewis is not being cocky - he is merely being correct. Schuey is not even close to the top 5.

Agreed in that its not cocky - It also sounds to me to be a classic case of asking a few questions specifically for soundbites and then taking them slightly out of context to make it say what the author wants. I wouldn't be suprised if (and I'll paraphrase) the interview was something like this:
Hack: "How do you feel about beating Micheal this year"
Lewis: "Well he's not in the championship hunt so it doesn't really mean anything right now"
Take that, add a few quotes from earlier in the year and bing-bango you've got a "story"

It's not as if his driving skill isn't unproven FFS! I take from the article that he wanted to have a go and bang wheels with schumi to prove he can beat him, and can't do that because schumi's car isn't up to it. What's wrong with that coming from an actual racing driver?
The guy can't do right for doing wrong I fear.
Got the reaction I expected, but I still think the comment was perhaps unnecessary and let's face it he's finished behind Schumi in the last two races.
We'll see what happens next year as to whether Schumi has indeed lost it.

Retiring isn't really the same as finishing behind. Yes, in the final classifications of course, but not when considering car pace or driver pace.
This isn't blind defence of Hamilton - I'm not a Hamilton fan really, though I don't mind him, I just enjoy the sport, and I do like Schuey (even though I think he should have not come back) - but I think you're just trying to make way too much of something that isn't there.

nonsense! he's not the slowest out there by a long shot. He's proven that at his age, and even after a lay off that he is still 'up there' with the best, not THE best, but he's certainly good enough to be there which makes him one of the top 20 drivers in the (road racing) world.He's saying it's not the challenge he was hoping for - because Smiling Mike isn't spending much time battling with him for track space, and when the two are together, Lewis and his car are much quicker. So there's no challenge, he gets no particular sense of achievement from beating Mike. Lewis is simply recognising that Mike isn't competitive this season.
If he wanted to be cocky, he'd be saying "look how good I am. I beat a seven times world champion!" Instead he's acknowledging that him beating Scummy this season has little to do with his own skill. There's no glory in beating the legend when he's not at his best, he's not trying to claim any, either.

Exactly this.What he was hoping for was Schui in a competitive car so they could battle on equal terms, and then see how he measures up.

I'm no particular fan of Hamilton but you got a reaction based on a thread title and post that has nothing to do with the article. Had you had a pop at any driver that had said what Hamilton has you'd have had exactly the same reaction.We'll see what happens next year as to whether Schumi has indeed lost it.

We will see what happens next year, yes, but Hamilton has not remotely implied Schumacher has lost anything.
