Championship Positions Assuming no Failiures/crashes
Discussion
There is an interesting article up at F1fanatic about what the championshio positions woul dbe if there had been no crashes and no mechanical failiures.
http://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2010/10/19/hes-14-point...
There was a bit of discussion about this in other threads, so I thought I would post it up here. The results are quite revealing, I think by eliminating errors (mistakes) and failiures (luck) you get a decent picture of who the fastest drivers are. (note to people who want to wilfully misread that: I said fastest, not most consistent, best, my favourite, or anything else).
So here are the lost point, which is also very telling

No doubting that Vettel should have had the title sewn up ages ago - but that its actually more in his own hands than othershttp://www.f1fanatic.co.uk/2010/10/19/hes-14-point...

Just shows that Vettel gets k*ob jockey of the year award then for his 'lack' comparatively of driving talent despite being the fastest driver over a single lap on multiple occations. Realistically since both McLaren lads are unlikely to take the title I'll put my support behind Webber, cos I certainly don't want Alfonso or arrogant, blame everybody but yourself, useless at passing, wannabe Schumy Jr aka Vettel to win!

the bottom table is the most interesting. Button having done a sterling job
How are the points worked out in the top table? Are they based on a hypothetical finishing position of the driver at the point at which they retired from the race e.g. Hamilton's engine blew on lap 37, and he was 5th place. Points assumed for that race are based on a 5th place finish

I think something like that, yes. There is an excel spreadsheet available if you follow the link to the F1fanatic article.
Button has had 0 points lost through driver error, but you have to wonder if he might not benefit from taking bigger risks to gain more points, given the scoring of the other drivers, who from the number of points lost seem not just to have lost more points due to driver error but also gained more points due to higher finishing positions.

The responses to JB nicely sum up the problem with this kind of statistics.
To one camp he's driven superbly with no errors, while to the other he isn't trying hard enough.
I think that's the point thoughTo one camp he's driven superbly with no errors, while to the other he isn't trying hard enough.
the best has to manage the balance, being safe and reliable is not going to win you the crown any more than over-driving and throwing the car in the gravel etc.
