ker is on everything these days...I definitely think there is a tendency among fans of sports to speak in favour of the 'less mainstream' option in order to somehow prove their geek supremacy. As if they are saying, "Look at me, I am such a big fan that I will turn over to the smaller station because, er, they have better commentary!"
This definitely happens with 5 Live F1. I watch the races with Twitter open, and the amount of people who are so eager to let everyone know that they are listening to 5 Live commentary is extraordinary. As if it's part of explaining how great an F1 fan you are, like a pissing contest among people who wish they were geeks.
The other thing is:
During any GP, PH is full of 'hardcore' fans telling everyone how 'hardcore' and true F1 they are while decrying Legard, then in the next post asking asking what the chequered flag is waved for.
Ho hum. Maybe those are just the ones that need everything explained to them in more detail...

I must admit to still being a bit aghast by the supporters of the mainstream BBC team JH/DC/EJ. If you compare their coherence and relevance in front of a microphone with even the part-time novice Chandhok on radio/extra it's quite cringe-worthy. A bit scary that all our license money is going in 'names' / jobs for the boys rather than getting talented commentators / pundits IMHO.

I must say though, F1 is not an all action sport and it needs a decent intelligent insight from a commentator to make it enjoyable. For the past year I've used the official F1 iPhone app to enhance my enjoyment (I can see who's catching who, how long the next pit stop will take etc), and it'd be nice to have this from the commentators.
