After a few years break, I've got the itch again and bought an FIA MGB race car. Previously I'd had the luxury of driving other peoples cars where I just turned up to drive. Now I have to get my hands dirty, transport the car and fend for myself. I plan to do a few events in Europe during the year.

I've never owned a trailer, so I'd welcome some advice/recommendations as they appear to be bloody expensive. Because garage space is tight, I will keep the car on the trailer at my home (secure site). Therefore I'm looking at an enclosed job with some room for a set of spare wheels/tyres, couple of jerry cans etc. The question is 'Which is best'? Choices seem to be...

1. Brian James RS3 or RS5 Shuttles (£8-10K)
2. PRG Tracsporter XW (£9K)
3. Woodford Trailers RL5000 (£9K)
4. An enclosed regular trailer with a plastic cover - wagon train style (£5K)

I'd be towing with either a Land Rover Freelander or a Peugeot Boxer motorhome van conversion. The car weighs around 850KG, so total weight is well within limits for these vehicles.

Any views on build quality, ease of towing, security, resale values etc.

Cheers for any help

You will need a BIG vehicle to tow a race shuttle safely, they are very prone to sidewinds & passing trucks etc. I would never want to tow one with small 4x4 or even a large estate car.

It will probably be OK behind a largeish camper van though.

Thank you, that's exactly the sort of feedback I need to help avoid expensive mistakes.

If you've got 7.5t on your license, I'd be thinking more along these lines.

I used a BJT Minno when I had the Fury, towed beautifully and desgined to fit into a standard garage.
Why bother with the expense of a shuttle ? Its a race care after all.

Brian James RS3. Brilliant piece of kit, by far the best for towing in all weathers behind most heavy car types (I use a Mercedes Vito SWB van and both van and trailer have been loaded to the limits with car and kit). Easy to move and big enough to carry most road/race cars.

The only downside in practical terms is you can't realisticaly work out of it at race meetings, it is very much a car transporter not race support vehicle like the others.

I have just ordered a wild body rl3000 wide body variant for my Porsche gt3 cup car. Wood ford were great in talking through the options available - I have gone for electric clam, electric winch and electric tilt. Cheaper than BJ, quality coupling and build.

I would think a narrow body RL3000 would take an MGB no problem.

I have towed this type of trailer behind an X5 without any issues at all.

Thank you for the feedback Pete. I did visit Woodford trailers and agree that they're a helpful and friendly bunch. I liked the RL3000 too but in the end went for the BJ clubman tiltbed as it was considerably lighter (The 3000 would be very close to the tow limit in my car)and also less visible when parked up in my drive.

Time will tell if it's the best choice?

Cheers
