I'm sure he is talking about the high development costs. I see where you are coming from, but if it was cheaper to develop engines yourself than simply buy them, then all teams would do it. The overheads are shared between their own engines and the engines that they sell. Ferrari would never buy engines off someone else as they are a manufacturer that sells cars on engines and performance.

I don't know the details of the teams budgets, but the other possible implication of the words you quoted is that McLaren and Red Bull get their engines at less than cost, whereas Ferrari don't.

I for one, don't care how much each team spends.

They have a budget, they know what the can or can not afford, and get to it.

If they can go faster at less cost than another team, good on them.

Teams who can not match the top guys for budget, and consequenly can not compete at the sharp end can carry fighting midfield runners, and act as feeders to the sharp end.

Its the same in most sports.

Good post! Remove the budget cap or at least let them Increase testing and get on with being the best of motorsport!

Well in the most part engine suppliers are also sponsors of the team, in Ferrair's case they are one and the same so there is no advertising money being utlised to subsidise the cost of the engine. Also economies of scale no doubt would also come into play, not to a large extent, but building an engine for 3 teams will spread the cost of R&D and fixed costs more than building it for 1.

Pat Fry and Neil Martin will between them cost Ferrari well over 1.5 million Euros....the wage bills of teams is massive let alone R&D costs, CFD costs, electricty bills and travel costs.

Ferrari does not have the highest travel bill nor the most employees withinn F1. In 2010 the owner of Red Bull invested well over 400 million Euros into his racing calendar.
