If we were to re-write the rules of F1.
Discussion
Hello fellow Piston Headers!
I wanted to raise a topic close to my heart, and I'm sure many more of you out there. F1 rules! Over recent weeks, we've seen wave after wave of revised plans, reckless thinking and new pressures leading to what might become a rather dull formula. As F1 has always set the tempo for the future of the sport, it could become the lower leagues who pick up the scrapes of action and adrenalin left behind.
As we'd hate to see F1 become more dull, and as we're all passionate about cars, motorsport and going fast, I thought it would be interesting to see what the rule book might look like if it were us, the paying public who had a presence at the committee meetings in Paris!
My shout:
Rule 1. Ban all meteorological broadcast data, forcing teams to react to the weather as it happens (no silly track wetting)
Rule 2. Create pit windows to put more emphasis on track passes than pit passes
Rule 3. Issue points for passes which are added to total points. Might not be enough to make it more worth while qualifying lower down, but enough to make the championship more dynamic.
What would you like to see in F1???

Simple - ban all electronic driver 'aids', ban this stupid moveable rear wing, ban all so called 'aerodynamic' body add on's, ban flappy paddle gearboxes & bring back proper manual gearboxes with a gear shift & a clutch peddle.
I would also bring back big fat sticky slick tyres & engines would not be less than 3.5 litres & should have a minimum of 10 cylinders.
No pit stops, no fannying about with idea's like Bernies idiotic suggestion of 'rain' showers, & no tyre changes unless the car has suffered a puncture.
Simple pure race cars with manual gear changes. That would sort out the nonsense we get these days.

I agree with you....however....I also like the fact that F1 creates new technology and innovation! So I'd like a compromise between pure racing and innovation....I just don't know how to achieve it!I would also bring back big fat sticky slick tyres & engines would not be less than 3.5 litres & should have a minimum of 10 cylinders.

Reduce aero by 50%.
Manual gearboxes with a simple graphic in the bottom right of the screen showing a live 3D rendering of the 3 pedals positioning.
Softer suspension so that you can see the physical attitude of the cars.
Carburettors.
Simpler less fussy bodywork.
That will do for now.

safety cell dimensions and crash test.
overall car dimensions (maximum size, minimum weight). say 2 metres x whatever length they are now. 600 kg is about right.
race fuel limit (cars start race on full tanks). importantly, no fuel mass flow limitation (i.e. they'll be way quicker in qualifying than the race).
engine configuration - whatever you like.
KERS - whatever you like.
gearbox - manual.
no driver aids.
active aerodynamics allowed.
that's about it.

You thought about that one much? "Fellipe, Fernando is faster than you, do you understand?"
"Oh, no he's not"
"Yes he is"
"No he's not"
"Yes he is"
"No he's not"
etc etc
Ban all aero- think of a larger Formula Ford car. Not even a rear undertray, so mechanical grip only. So...
Increase rear tyre width.
Engines should be from a variety of options- small turbo, larger N/A with multiple fuel choices. Limit fuel consumption to promote innovation
Max 2 people to work on the car during a pit stop- so should the driver driver easier, and make the tyres last longer
Only race on "good" circuits. Having a nice hotel attached is very nice etc, but you're there to race, so race.

Yep, remove all the stupid rules and regulations; let the engineers innovate and the drivers get on with driving and taking chances. Ecclestone can't see that the more they regulate and stifle, the less interesting and exciting the racing becomes. I can't describe my frustration at the 'penalties' imposed for some minor infringement of Petty Rule No.4759, Article 18, Section 5, Subsection 14, Appendix 175b: "The driver shall not overtake whilst pulling a silly face inside his helmet."
The rule book is being rewritten as we speak. Not in the same way as it has every fornight over recent years but with the new concorde agreement. It will be one of the most political formulae out there.
It is the big test for Todt.
Rumours suggest four cylinder engines with forced induction being considered.
Whatever the eventual decision it seems probable that it will be considerably different from what we have today.
We've had mssaive reductions in power before: 1500 bhp in qually to a bit over half that. It was still F1 though. But now Todt will have to balance different demands. Whatever comes out will be a compromise.

To get some really exciting action how about using production based saloon cars, limit the drivers to uk with the odd foreign hotshoe and a tv celebrity with a grudge against a lanky bloke, run the championship on uk tracks only dont worry too much about on track argy-bargy have three races per meeting and you have the recipe for a perfect race championship.
Oh damn it already exists, thought i was on to a winning idea that knocks dull F1 in to the weeds.
