Monaco Grand Prix

After finding out yesterday that my fathers stomach cancer is inoperable and has only months to live, I thought it was about time we both fullfilled a dream we have to go and see the Monaco GP.
Obviously we don't want to just go there and watch it from the surrounding hills for free, but at the same time I don't think I can afford staying at Casino square.
With that in mind, can the PH massif reccommend either a good hotel to stay where we can see the GP from the room terrace. Or where is the best place to source tickets for the GP, and just book a hotel near the track?
Any suggestions on this, or alternative ideas welcomed and appreciated.

Firstly, sorry to hear about your Dad, news like that is never welcome.
Ref. the F1, why not book with one of the tour operators? it's fairly close to the event now so many of the accommodation options will already have been booked and a tour company need not be too pricy.

failing that just go for the best of everything, worrying about the cost later, and enjoy the quality time with your Dad.

I'd echo the first reply - sorry to hear about how things are and good luck with getting the trip together.
We went a few years ago and used Kuoni for the hotel/flights/transfers package (stayed in Nice) all of which worked out fine - and certainly a way of ensuring the flight prices are not too bad -they increase a scary amount the closer to the weekend you get! We booked grandstand tickets direct with the Auto Club du Monaco. Their website allows you to see the view from each grandstand and this year seems to be showing how many are already sold:

I went in 2003 and bought tickets on GP weekend, from the ticket booths. Possibly not worth the risk in your circumstances. If not, the official site to gt them, I think, is here:

Had great seats when I went, K Lower. Big pile up right in front of us as a Honda (IIRC) blew it's engine and cars went into each other. Think I only paid 180 quid (8yrs' inflation!).
I stayed in Menton. Nice little place just a 10 min train ride from Monaco. Couldn't have been easier. I stayed at the Aiglon. Quirky old hotel, but liked it very much and would stay again.

The times I have been I have booked with just tickets. They organise hotwels in nice with boat transfers if you want to try something different. Otherwise you can cab it ( not cheap) or get the train into Monaco. Ive always had good seats before the swimming pool area and opposite the yachts.
The advantage of staying in Nice is that its cheaper and not as busy, there is also the opportunity to do other things whilst there.

From Monaco station, you exit directly at St Devote with a subway to Tabac/Swimming Pool. If you get tickets for Casino or Mirabeau, you can get an elevator to the high level exit to the station , so you dont have to climb the steep hill to Casino square.

Sadly it's looking increasingly unlightly this is going to happen now. I have spent most of the morning on the phone to various companies and getting health insurance is almost impossible, for many reasons, but mostly because he doesn't want to go through chemo (which I can totally understand).
My backup plan was to buy a full HD TV and watch the GP in HD round mine with a bottle of vino and a meal. So I shall talk to him this afternoon and get his opinion.

Sorry to hear about your father - i wish you both well.
Monaco can be done vaguely reasonably - but you need to stay outside of monaco and get the train in, in the mornings. It all runs very efficiently - though I've always stayed in Monaco.
It's an amazing experience for sure - even just walking around on a Saturday night is something to experience.
I can't actually recommend anywhere to stay outside of Monaco but on race day you could get a balcony view for about 200-300euros. These are private flats that overlook the track, that cram in as many people as possible, offer some food and wine etc. It's OK - but it's always best to have access to a TV or kangaroo TV.
If you can go - I'm sure I can put you in touch with some people that can sort it out for you.
Jenson Button has his boat in the harbour and you can be on that for £10k ea - might be able to get you a deal

I echo the sentiment of the other members, really sorry to hear about your dad. I lost my own dad during the first Singapore GP a year past September, he had a fall, was hospitalised and I couldn't get back to the UK in time before we lost him.

Again if you decide to go to Monaco you can have 2 spaces there for cost price or on one of our lower balconies if you prefer to be closer to the action. There are also a selection of restaurants on the start/finish straight with viewing options which include lunch or there are grandstand tickets as you know. If you are going for grandstand then don't buy just tickets from a tour operator unless they are adding value for you with transfers, expertise, extras, etc. - if it's just tickets a previous member is correct, best place to buy them is direct from the Automobile Club de Monaco (www.acm.mc and follow the link to online ticketing, or http://www.formula1monaco.com/).
