Interlagos claims another life

The Interlagos circuit has claimed the life of another driver, questioning track safety for the upcoming 2011 Brazilian GP.

Sad for the drivers involved but I wouldn't want these circuits emaculated any more than they are already.

I can't help wonder what your thoughts are to the changes they made to San Marino following Senna's crash.

Two deaths in a very short space of time is telling, and the huge accidents at Interlagos over the years have regularly raised concerns.
I don't think a circuit need necessarily be emasculated simply by being made safer.

How would simply putting a run off area at that corner 'emasculate' it?

Make it gravel if you like, but it's always been a needlessly dangerous corner.

I thought there was a problem with increasing the run-off area though due to either a physical obstruction behind the wall that point, on the land not being owned by the circuit.

I dont believe Eric is concerned if they add more run off, although personally I believe if you go in to a run-off there should be a penalty!

Fair enough to have some sort of penalty if you stray into the run-off area.

The problem is that the penalty for not having a run-off is either serious injury or death. Seems a bit harsh.

Try driving a bit more slowly.

Honestly - drivers should drive within the limitations of the circuit. More run off encourages more hooligan driving. Look at the BTCC last weekend - the driving standards were nothing short of scandalous (albeit enjoyable).

The days of lamp posts, benches, ravines, cast iron railings etc are long gone. Most circuits are infinitely safer than they were in past days. Every time there is an accident at a particular part of the citrcuit should not be the trigger for an immediate replanning of that part of the track.

Look at the immense run off we have at Paddock Hill Bend compared to 30 plus years ago and then look at what happend the other day at that corner. Would you propose increasing the run off or gravel trap there until it encroaches into Surrey?

With Paddock Hill - i would like the gravel trap removed - or at least reduced. And replaced with either grasscrete blocks (such as the outside of Old Hall and Lodge at Oulton Park, or high grip tarmac, such as at Paul Richarde. For the simple reason that i see so many cars end up sliding in there sideways and being tipped into a roll. It also hampers Marshals getting to a car as running through deep gravel carrying 15 odd kilos of fire bottle is bloomin difficult!
