Stoke to Troutbeck, Penrith
Discussion
The girlfriend and I have 2 nights away booked and I fancy taking a detour to alleviate some of boredom of the motorway.
We will be leaving just before lunch on Friday to hopefully miss some of the bank holiday traffic and then I was thinking of coming off the M6 at Junc. 36 and working my way over to the A592/A5091, which takes us to pretty much where we're staying.
Basic Route:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&a...
Is it worth using the A590 to join the A592 right at the bottom tip of Windermere instead for better views/roads?
"Sightseeing" on Saturday is likely to include a loop around Honister pass (B5298) and Whinlatter pass (B5292 - which one would be better to start on from Keswick?
On Sunday the return journey could include Wrynose and Hardknott pass which are not far south, but I'm unsure as to where to go after or if it is best to just double back and head back to the M6 via Windermere and Kendal?
Any other route suggestions welcome
Thanks in advance

IMO not worth doing the trip all the way up the side of Windermere on your way up, though it is a nice drive. Going over Kirkstone as you plan is a nice scenic route, or you could go the whole way up the A591 which is also very scenic and will likely be a lot faster if you're doing it later in the evening.
Wrynose and Hardknott are worth doing. After you've come over Hardknott, you'll drop into Eskdale valley (where Derrek Bird did the decent thing, as it happens...). Just follow the road until you come to a T junction (there'll be a pub opposite). Turn left and follow that road. That'll lift you onto the fells, with great views in all directions, then drop you into the Ulph valley, which is beautiful in its own right. Eventually you'll reach the A595 (I think it's the 595), at which point turn left. After a while you'll reach the main A590 at Greenod. Turn left onto that and follow until you reach Junction 36, to the M6 South.
It's a nice route to do and infinately more interesting than just running down through Windermere again.

Thanks for the advice all
Looks like the rain will hold out until Friday evening according to the forecast, the weekend doesn't look too promising though
(maybe I should have bought Rainsports).

Scenic by going over Kirkstone, or more fun to drive if you take the A6 from Kendal to Penrith - this road has been made redundant by the M6 so is often empty and fast.
A6 looks fast, if it wasn't for the Kirkstone pass being right on the way then I'd be on it, definately looks a better option than the M6!10 Pence Short said:

I'm guessing the map points to the caravan park you are staying at, if so, superb choice. Done plenty of work there, and you will find it hard to meed a nicer bunch of people
You didn't make the camping pod thing I'm staying in did you?!
