What are your road trip plans?
Discussion
So what road trips do you have planned for the year? Post a pic of your route, details of what your up to and maybe ask advice on suitable "hoon" spots along the way.
Here's mine, last two weeks of August heading up to Scotland in the GTS for some Golf, visiting old RAF buddies and take in a bit of scenery:

Suggestions for must see/drive routes appreciated.
If anyone knows of a way to teleport the car to Carlisle and back to avoid the mundane element that would be a great help.

Something like this:

We did something a bit like it last year, but this year we're cutting out western France and giving more time to the Austrian alps. We might add in a few of the Swiss/Italian passes too. I think we're going to be a group of 3 bikes and a car, but that's not finalised yet. We're going last weekend of August for two weeks, and mostly camping to keep costs down. We did 3200 miles in 10 days last year which was fine, but we're hoping to cut down on the number of 600 mile days this year!
I can't wait to get back to Austria – I love that place.

I'd take a different route between Skye and Edinburgh, unless you have reasons for that route. From Kyle of Lochalsh head north on the A890, then A896, loop to Applecross and round the coast, back to A896 to Kinlochewe, then choice of round the coast or back towards Achnasheen etc. Then A835/A9 to Inv.
From Inverness to Edinburgh, head east on the A96 to Nairn, then take the A939 all the way south to Ballater, the A93 to Perth and a choice of Mway or back roads to Edinburgh.
Bear in mind August is prime caravan and coach touring season in the highlands, so for quiet roads best time is to drive early in the day or late in the day.
After just getting back from one trip, I've already set out what I want to do next year. 4 days of driving, a day of sightseeing in Monaco and then another 4 days of driving.

Looking to include Spa, 'Ring, Porsche/Mercedes museums at Stuttgart, a bit of Austria, Stelvio, Turin (Lingotto specifically), Monaco, Route Napoleon, St Bernard passes (more of the Italian Job), a bit of Switzerland, then back up to the 'Ring before going back to Dunkerque. If we get it right we should be doing nine different countries in all, excluding the UK
Threesixty, I don't know how precise your route is on the map, but it looks like you're doing motorway between Reims and Dijon. I'd suggest the backroads between those two (D396 and D996), as they're brilliant. They're both dead quiet, the D396 is very straight and fast, the D996 is a lovely twisty route through a bit of forest. Both are on my route from the trip I've just done.

Thanks! Im not quite sure how we'll be doing our first leg yet, time constraints might mean we have to stick to the toll roads to get to grenoble at a sensible time.Chris71 said:
I did almost exactly that - well the Spanish part of it - a few weeks back. Have you been to that area before?
Also, make sure you take in the GI-682 on the coast north of Barcelona (Lloret de Mar to Saint Felieu) it is immense!
Not in a car, thanks for the reccomendation! One of our hotels is in Lloret de Mar, so no excuse I guess! Also, make sure you take in the GI-682 on the coast north of Barcelona (Lloret de Mar to Saint Felieu) it is immense!
EDIT: Just checked out the GI-682 on google maps, Oh my! That road looks amazing even on google maps!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqZaBfLDjs8Okay, that's taken from a bike and it's going in the opposite direction to the way I did it, but skip two or three minutes in and just look at it... It feels even twistier in real life!
The roads inland of that area are riddled with good roads too. You'd struggle not to find some. There's one - I think it's the BV-5213 - that only leads up to the Monastery of Casserres near Vic. Worth a look if you're nearby. Also, there's another one - the GI-552 I think it might be looking at the map.
The N403 (north of Toledo) is quite good in places if you find yourself in that neck of the woods. That said, looking at your route, you'll be too far West. If you're near Seville, I'm told there's a good road near the new Monteblanco circuit; I think it's the A483 or A493.
PS I broke my crankshaft hooning along the GI-682. It was worth it.

Euro hoon 1: France through Switzerland, all the best alpine passes Stelvio, Furka etc. Through northern Italy back into Switzerland for the Andermatt loop then back home through France. With my boys
Euro hoon 2: autobahn to the black forest, camping and day trips to great roads and Austria!
this one will be with my girlfriend.
My EP3 doesn't know what it's got coming this summer

Also fellow PH mateys routes look brilliant!

Nothing as grand as some of these Euro trips, a couple of day trips, one route through the Brecons, Cambrians and Elan Valley in mid-Wales, one around the Borders near Moffat and the Dalveen Pass, and finally a proper 3-day tour of Scotland along the usual sort of routes:
Loch Lomond, Glen Coe, Mallaig, Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh, Applecross, Loch Maree, Ullapool, Kylescu, Durness, Lairg, Inverness, Nairn, Grantown-on-Spey, Glenshee, Pitlochry, Crief and Stirling.
Just gotta find the time now, and preferably the weather too!

Here's my trip to Venice where me and my fiancée will be staying for a week. Driving the Wolfgang Pass, Flüela Pass, Stelvio Pass and the Gavia pass on the way. On the way back stopping of at Lake Como for two night's, then to Lucerne for a night via San Bernardino Pass, Oberalp Pass, Furka Pass, Grimsel Pass. Then onto the ring via the B500 for a few laps if possible.
Can't wait

I want to go to the Alps again like I have for the last couple years, but i dont have the money and so im going to do another trip through Wales again, exploring the last few great roads I havnt done. I would also like to go back to Yorkshire again and not have any bloody dog spoiling the fun, but from the southwest, that is quite an expensive drive

Just back from Switzerland where it was the 20th anniversary of the Swiss MX5 Club.
They organised a v. nice hotel near Lucerne for 79 cars from all over Europe
and we managed to fit in the Gotthard, Furka, Grimsel, Susten , Lukmanier and Oberalp passes over a couple of days, including going down the Val Tremola in fog/cloud
8 days & 2200 miles in a 15 year old car - brilliant
