Looking at taking the Dover - Calais or Dover - Dunkirk ferry in late August and doing a 4 night trip to include a couple of laps of the 'Ring.

Really thinking about scenic roads rather than constant motorways, but clearly they can't be avoided.

Might be nice to stop of in Reims, but other than that no specific points of interest have to be squeezed in.

Ideally around 3-4 hours driving max per day as I'll be travelling with the wife and need to keep her interested too....

Any route ideas, previous itineraries, hotel suggestions, villages to stop off in, little bars to sample etc., would really be appreciated.

Monschau, Germany - half timbered houses and a few good
restaurants.

Not Brugge - it's packed with drunken Brits and it knows
it is tourist central. Ghent much nicer and less touristy.

Kortrijk and Ypres both pretty good.

Both Aachen and Maastricht I liked, but Liege I found
a bit too well, French, for my tastes.

Valkenburg, NL I liked also.
