We are currently planning a return trip from the UK to Lake Como in Northern Italy. The idea is to leave at the end of Aug for a 10 day round trip.

We have booked hotels at Reims, Tremezzo on Lake Como and Bruges.

Ideas at present are:
Reims to Lausanne
Lausanne to Lugano (via Simplon Pass)
Lugano to Tremezzo
Return:
Tremezzo to Freiburg/Strasbourg???
Freiburg/Strasbourg??? to Charleville-Mezieres??? (N. France)
Charleville-Mezieres??? to Bruges

I do not want to drive for more than 7 hrs each day and would prefere to keep to fast major roads rather than motorways.

Therefore the question is does anyone have any better routes, stop overs than those detailed above. I would also be grateful for any recommendations for hotels with secure parking.

Many thanks in advance,
Steve

Lausanne to Lugano (via Simplon Pass) is a beauty of a drive.

Must buy 30 Swiss Frank carnet for use of Swiss motorways. Worth it just for the Swiss side of lake Geneva stretch alone - tunnels are used for Aircraft in case of war
and they practice landing yearly !

Will be ding it myself last week in June

Hi Cyrus,

Thanks for the reply.

We were planning on keeping away from the motorway route from Lausanne. I have driven from Geneva airport to Zermatt on the motorway previously, so know the general route to Visp via Sion.

However I may decide to purchase the motorway pass just in case we need to travel quicker than thought.
