Me and SWMBO are heading down to Cornwall for our summer break on the 30th (a Saturday no less) so I imagine the M6 - M5 - A30 will be crazy busy during the daytime due to summer holidays and most peoples change over day for leaving/arriving at campsites etc.

I proposed to leave about 5am and hopefully arrive about 7am but my Dad thinks this is a bad idea, advising me to leave about 2am to avoid the traffic.

Boring question I know but open to suggestions of others.

I have spent many years driving between the Midlands and Falmouth and any drive in August is going to be problematic. There is no simple answer.

Your Dad is right starting early AM is a good idea.

I presume you mean to arrive at 7PM unless you are anticipating a 24 hour ++ drive.

The A38 is an alternative route but also fraught with traffic in August. The A30 is unavoidable and will be heavy and slow.

Start early split driving with SWMBO stop regularly stay as safe as you can.

I now have a home in Exmouth rather than Falmouth which is much more accessible from business in Birmingham simply because of this travel difficulty

I do not think there is an easy solution except to pace yourself.

Haha! Oops. I meant 12 noon, think I must have got the number 7 from the amount of time it will take in hours!

Presumably my dads biggest concerns were the fact I'd have to average 175 mph in a diesel Volvo!

Have you considered flying from Manchester to Newquay, then hiring a car? I think Easyjet service that route.

Take it easy and leave as early as you can, split the driving. Get there early and have a kip!

So much less stress.
