I was supposed to be borrowing a fairly special car for a driving holiday in the South of France, but due to unforeseen circumstances frown the pickup/dropoff location is more than likely to shift to Munich.... Can anyone recommend some great driving roads in the area to rival Route Napolean / Col D'Vence? Don't mind racking up a few hundred km's, just want to avoid it being all autobahn (although a few kms of derestricted might be fun smile ) and ideally with a destination of a nice (but not overly expensive) hotel in the Bavarian Alps or Austria....

Was there at the weekend...

Head South from Munich to Garmisch. Mostly unrestricted... but be careful just past the Pensburg turning because it goes to single file and traffic lights at Buchwies... bit of a brake test for the unwary.

Then head east, fun stop at Linderhof castle and off into Austria and head over to France. Or, get off at Penzburg, off to Tegernsee (some fun roads up out of town - also a brewery producing my favourite beer) then head over the mountains to Innsbruck and off to France.

I wouldn't say there's much to compare to the great driving roads but heading that way can certainly be fun.

Yeah, heading south to Austria seemed to make sense to me - but sounds like you're saying the roads won't rival those North of Nice?

Bit of a rush now, but Fussen is nice (hotel Hirsch) and some nice b-roads from there into Austria... Nice easy drive from Munich too. I only had a 118i hire car, but still had plenty of fun.

Edit: and yes, all the beers are good, but try Starnberger - best of the best in my view!

If its not too late a few good tips are (just google it)
Kesselbergstrecke near Garmisch from there via Bad Toelz to the Sudelfeld Strasse, then via Chiemsee to Salzburg -back via Berchtresgarden - Steinpass - Kaiserwinkel
Chiemsee with its Castle and Salzburg has plenry of Sightseeing, too a nice Hotel would be

If you get delayed somewhere you are never too far from the Autobahn to blast back
Have fun - this time of year is the best to go...

Just a little too late but thanks anyway smile Car loan was changed to Milan in the end so headed straight for the Alps staying @ Pra Loup (nr Barcelonnette) then south across a lot of passes before attacking the wonderful roads north of Vence & Nice. Journey back from Nice - Milan was terrific too taking in some great Italian mountain roads once we got off the autostrada.
