Afternoon chaps,

On the 16th of september me & afew buddies off to manchester for a night to watch my mates band play. I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any good driving roads over the peaks, rather than the usual motorway route. Any maps / routes would be greatly appricated.

Cheers chaps! smile

No average speed cameras, but there are camera vans around sometimes. Also, if you're travelling at rush hour, don't bother as you'll get frustrated behind slower traffic.

I would recommend:

A610 to Ambergate
A6 to Cromford
A5012 to Newhaven
A515 to Buxton
A5004 to Whaley Bridge
A6 to Manchester

The Snake don't have av speed, that's the A616 joining the Woodhead which is a longer way with less steep gradient.

BTW haven't seen any camera vans on Snake while I was driving through probably is about the time I passed.

That's very similar to the route I take across the Peaks to visit my folks in South Manchester. It's a fine drive.

The A6 between the Peak and Manchester is a hateful road.

Is this the one that goes through Bakewell?

I seem to remember that being quite fun. Many years ago though now so it's probably full of cameras.

Is this the one where you make good progress (traffic allowing) until you hit Stockport? Then it seems to take as long to travel the last 20 miles as it did to do the previous 100?

Erm, yes hehe but for me the great roads up until Whaley Bridge make up for the horrible drive through Stockport.

And no, this route doesn't include Bakewell, because that road does now have cameras on it.

Yeah the drive up to and just after Buxton is very nice, but someone needs to build some sort of giant flyover/tunnel all the way over/under Stockport. Puts me off even attempting it. I think last time, I experimented with some kind of Manchester ring road diversion to avoid Stockport, but ended up on the M1, so not sure how successful that was.

I moved from Blackburn to Nottingham last summer so drove this area multiple times for interviews house hunting etc.

Would definately agree with chriscoates route as been one of the better options, tho some of these roads will be 50mph limits, there aren't many fixed cameras.

A619 from Chesterfield then A623 then A6 into Manchester is also good, some twisty bits and there are some straights for overtakes. 50mph limit mostly but no fixed cameras.

A57 (Snake Pass) is definately worth doing if you've never driven it before, there are average speed cameras on part of it but you'd have to be really trying to break the 50mph limit on that section anyway, and as said before if busy can be very tedious.

Do not take A616 and A628 - it'll be busy, nearly completely covered by average speed cameras and is solid white line almost the whole way.

On every route the last section into Manchester is terrible - A6 is probably the worst but A57 from Glossop up to the A628 is bad as well.

Agree that every road entering Manchester is terrible, there could be tailbacks hell long anytime except midnight.
A6 is definitely a big NO for me, the stop-go and traffic along starting from longsight until you left stockport, the often congestion between A57/M67 Junction and the A628/A57 junction even extended tailbacks to the joints and on the motorway. to make sure the time needed being more accurate the A50 and M6 as the navigation shows would be better. Routes crossing the Pennines are nice but not quick, only worth for a relaxing day out.
