...there is always someone who thinks they know better ;-)

This was last weekend. We decide to hike up to the Roman Fort at Hardknott. At the bottom we came across this sign:

A little further up and looking back...

A bit further.

Then we started to see the Hardnott Pass road itself:

And then.

A little closer.

Basically the driver had ground to halt on the ice, almost at the start of the pass and the car had been abandoned. The road was even worse further up, they were lucky they could still walk back to civilization. We came back about three hours later and the car was being loaded onto a flat bed.

A few more gratuitous fell images :-)

I did once try and drive over there on my way to Wasdale in my 1275gt.

It started snowing before we got to the lakes and was pretty bad by the time we got to the pass, and it was dark. But when it's 1979 and you are 19 you try these things. Told my chum to get out and sit on the bonnet to improve traction. I think I subscribed to the 'if the wheels spin flat out in 4th they will melt the snow' school of winter driving!

He still reminds me of that evening and in particular me reversing down the hill in a blizzard with him still on the bonnet talking me down with the aid of a torch.

Pitched the tent at Wasdale Head by the car headlights on the snow as I recall.

Now I am at an age where I can see pics like that and think...what a knob!
