Road trip to include the Spa GP and the 'ring
Discussion
Hello, i'm looking to go to the Spa GP this year and thought i'd make a decent trip out of it. i did a 2000 mile round trip through France last year that was amzing espicially when we got to the south of France and on to some of the windy roads around Monaco.
I'm thinking of catching the ferry from Dover to dunkirk and then heading in to Belgium on to Germany to to the 'ring then head south to Switzerland, touch a bit of Italy then back up passed Monaco and up through the East of France. I've only ever driven in France so i'm just after some advice on what roads are best to visit and any good places to stay along the way. If anybody has done a similar trip i'd be very grateful for some advice. I will be doing this trip in August.
Cheers, Andy
ps probably be doing the trip in a megane sport but hopefully a vx220!

Sounds a very similar route to what I did last May, my friend did that in a Megane Sport too.
Our route is here and a write-up (if you fancy a fairly long read!) is here.
We stayed mostly in cheap hotels, doing the trip on a budget, with the Ibis at Como and Hotel an der Nordschleife being our most expensive.
Places I would recommend are Como (just a lovely place to chill out in the evening after a day of driving), the Col de Turini if you've got time, and the route we took between Dijon and Reims, an almost unused road for miles and miles, a brilliant drive too.
You might as well stop off at Hockenheim on the way through too, the motorway goes right past it.

Hi James,
thanks for that! your route sounds very similar to what i want to do. I took a tent last time and camped but it was a lot of clobber to cart 2000 miles so think i'll be looking at hotels this time! I'll have a read of your diary when i get chance. Thanks for the advice i'll keep planning away!

Hi Gordy, We plan to do this trip on the the 20th of August - the 3rd of september. These are just rough dates atm. We want to have a good 10 dyas or so on the road going South through France then east in to Monaco up through Switzerland then germany then Belgium to finish with the Spa GP on the first weekend of September. We had originally planned to do it in reverse but with time off work and so on i think it's going to be best this way. Also dont want to have any "inicidents" in the car at the 'ring at the beginning of the trip! lol.
We're trying to fit it around a music concert we wanted to attend but it doesnt look like it's possible and if it's one ofr the other it has to be the road trip!
Any other PH's that are looking to do a similar trip are more than welcome to join us!
