I'm driving to a place called Camporosso in Italy in August this year and am looking at routes. It's just over the French border and ViaMichelin is suggesting a straightforward route down to Lyon and then Aix en Provence, before taking the coastal route into Italy.

Virtually all is Autoroute which is fine but a little dull, so I'm thinking whether to follow this and do the c.760 miles in one hit, or turn off near Grenoble and take a more scenic route, stopping over and completing the journey fresh the next morning.

I'm with the family so taking a PH route, such as Route Napoleon won't be welcomed as i'll probably make them all sick. We did over 800 miles in a day last year driving to Garmisch Partenkirchen and the family coped well. A lot was on Autobahn though and we could sit at 120 fine. France more likely to be 90.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent place to break the journey, or do I just go for it?

Thanks

Calais to Reims, just to the west of Reims is the D27 and this

from there head over to Mulhouse, then into Switzerland heading south to the Grand St Bernard pass, south west into France over the Petit St Bernard pass, you can then head south west to Grenoble and take Route Napoleon (N85 mainly I think) down to the south coast near Nice then it's along the coast through Monaco and into Italy.

It's what I'm planning on doing next year before heading to Maranello, Monza, the Stelvio pass, through Switzerland doing 3 or 4 more mountain passes, then Germany doing the Black Forest, Stuttgart (Porsche and Merc museums) up to Hockenheim then The Nurburgring, into Belgium and Spa then back to Calais

no worries, if I were on my own, or at least without the kids, then I'd be going for it! Thanks anyway!
