Hi,

Does anyone know anything about Luxembourg?

I've managed to completely ignore the country for the past 36 years, but a few friends and I have green passes to go away on the weekend of 3-5 August and have chosen Luxembourg as our destination - the rationale being that it's closer than the Alps (which we've done before) cheaper to get to (so easier to get there in time for a meal and a few beers on Friday night) and cheaper to find good accommodation.

The plan is as follows:

Friday evening - Get there, go out, explore a bit
Saturday - Find and drive as many good roads as we can.
Sunday - An early trip to the 'Ring and a meander back to Calais for a 9pm crossing to Blighty.

The cars:

Mk1 MX5
Mk2 MX5
156 GTA
Elise S3

All advice on roads, places to go or things to do gratefully received!

Thanks
Matt

I've been about a dozen times.

Mainly, I use it as a stop over point on the way back home
to the Fatherland. It has cheap beer, petrol, wine, tobacco and cigarettes.

Lux City is very good, Remich quite pretty, some of the other villages
along the Mosel are reasonable.

That's about all I can think of, off the top of my head.

Roads wise, I can't think of a single interesting one, but then
with the Autobahn starting just after Remich, I am not that bothered.

I lived there for a bit, as above, fuel is cheap. The roads to the north of the city are good and the nightlife in the city is pretty good if you head down the valley from the main town (the area around the station is a bit rough).

I have driven a lot of the roads north of Ettelbruck. Apart from good roads its rather boring there so you might wanne stay in Luxembourg city itself. I've made a lap with the best roads see here from the north which i drive often. For you guys something like this this might be better for the saturday. I have driven 99% of that route and it's pretty epic.

For accomodation, I've stayed at Chateau D'urspelt but they are probably booked already. Lots of weddings around this time.

Hi,

Quick update - got back last night from the weekend in Luxembourg, which was epic.

A few last minute car changes meant we were all in MX5s - nearly 1000 miles of rain or shine roof down motoring through amazing scenery and roads - add in good company, good food and a big night out in Luxembourg and it jumps right to the top of my favourite road trips.

We took the motorway through Belgium on Friday night, stopping in Gent for dinner and arriving at our Luxembourg hotel at about 1am.

Saturday saw us heading off early into the Mosel Valley - remarkably hilly, lightly populated and full of sweeping fast roads and tight climbs through deserted forests - we spent the day making a big loop which took us back to Luxembourg for early evening.

On Sunday (after recovering from the night before) we did Luxembourg - covering much of the route set out above as we meandered north - finding roads, views, countryside and villages that surprised us all - it's definitely a hidden treasure and being so close to Blighty, I'll certainly be heading back.

To cap it all off, at about 4pm we stopped in Francorchamps for a coffee, only to be greeted by the sound of the final support race of the Spa 24hrs. Following our ears, we walked straight into a deserted Spa (very strange) and caught 30 mins of 911s flying through Eau Rouge. I’ve never been there before and I now see why it’s so legendary. TV doesn’t do it justice or highlight how steep it is.

We got back to London completely knackered, just in time for the 100m final and to see a round up of the weekend's collection of GB gold medals - brilliant.

Route and more pics to follow, but here are a couple in the meantime – the MX5s certainly attracted attention!

Cheers for the advice !

Glad you had a good time! And yeah, the area has some real appeal to car enthousiasts.

I've found who you all are! I'm an mx5nutz member but had no joy on there.
I parked next to you in my mk2 at the Doubletree Hilton at 2am on Friday night on way back from round trip from Luxembourg, via Strasbourg,Freiburg,Swiss border, then back through Black Forest on back roads- all in a day!
Stayed in Lux for 3 nights in total, second visit as we found the more you explore it the better it gets.
Did Spa & Nurburg last year too,and totally agree with Eau Rouge and how it is when you're there.
We got back Saturday night, via Bruges for dinner as an impulsive move, and clocked up 1500 miles by the time we got home to Southend.
We were up too late to catch up with you on Saturday, and missed photo opportunity in daylight with your 5's (stunning LeMans by the way)
Maybe bump into you on your next trip,we're planning more thorough visit to Black Forest, then on to Zurich.

Haha - there you are !

I was about to post on MX5OC to see if I could find you... it was very odd - we parked 4 MX5s at 1am and by 8am there were 5 of them !

We made an early getaway on Saturday and was hoping to find you that evening, but it sounds like you were long gone by then !

Glad you had a good trip too!

Glad we found who we parked next to. Couldn't believe it when we got back to hotel! Had to park next to you obviously even though that area is staff parking (parked there before though and didn't have a problem)
Thoroughly recommend the Black Forest- great roads and it's amazing scenery.
You wouldn't have found me on mx5oc as not a member- you have to pay,and prefer mx5nutz.
An hour earlier and we'd have pulled in the same time as you!
Keep us informed of any further trips if you do it in mx's again, and I'll do likewise, and we can share any info or tips.
