I would recommend going through the balkans. I served there in 99 and it is a beautiful country. Food and drink is excellent and cheap, especially Kuscivac (pear liquer 25% vol). I went to Zagreb and watched split play Zagreb and it cost £4 for best seats in the stadium. Watch out for speed traps. A guy sat at the side of the road by an unmarked van looks innocent but there is usually a speed camera in front of the van and a waiting police car further down the road!
I drove from the UK to Greece in late 2008, following a route through Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria then into Greece.
Firstly, I'd definitely recommend popping into Slovenia - the people and the scenery are some of the nicest I've encountered anywhere, and the lakeside town of Bled is definitely worth the detour if quaint alpine lakes and snowy mountains are your thing.
On a slightly less interesting note, I'd also recommend checking your insurance before you leave - the biggest mistake we made was assuming that buying insurance for Serbia on the border would be reasonably cheap - it turned out to be 135 euros per car for the minimum of one month third party (in 2008, so probably more now). With this in mind, I'd suggest getting green card insurance arranged for any non-EU countries you plan on visiting before you leave the UK. Other than that, we found it a fairly straightforward part of the world to pass through by car.
Good luck with whatever route you decide on, and have a great trip.
