Yup you will love the Simplon pass - good long sweepers with dangerousely distracting views. Itallian side more of a challenge - you'll se what I mean when you get there :-) Hope your Grif is fuel injected, carbs may stutter at altitude ?
As an aside I just did a couple of drags this weekend against PH HorseApple's 4.5 grif and he was 0.5 sec ahead up to 70mph but then lost as the turbos really kicked in on my car. Impressive stuf however from the plastic fantastic !

Interesting stuff.
I got a 13.72 @110mph on my first drag racing attempt.
I was pretty pleased considering I was expecting 15-16 secs. Plus first and second were constant wheel spins! Reckon a better driver (or a bit more practice for me) could shave a second off without too much trouble.
It is fuel injected but I hadnt thought about altitude problems! I sense another thread coming along!

Cyrus,
Great write-up. It brought a few blissfull minutes to an otherwise dull lunch-time. Took me back to my coming of age trip (back-in-the-day) me, my mate, our girlfriends and a 3 week trans-european bike trip that opened my eyes to the world. Thanks for taking the time that's what pistonheads should be for.

Thanks Cyrus - nice little write up.
I got back a couple of weeks ago from a 3 week drive from France over into and around Italy - about 2800 miles in all. Your travelogue sparked many regrets for me as the wonderful roads were travelled in the family bus with the sprogs in the back, rather than in the porker! What a waste! And coming back, with sleeping kids in the back I went through the tunnel of Mont Blanc (29 euros the robbers!) rather than over the St Bernard Pass.
Am now going to have to sell the children and go back to do it properly!

Good write-up.
Brings back my memories of whenever I drive "on the other side".
Immediately noticeable as soon as you exit the chunnel is the improved quality of the road surfaces and the obvious general desire with the road builders / designers to enable smooth progress.
No congestion-creating schemes, less traffic, just freedom to drive smoothly and get into a great rhythm (ahem).

Thanks for that.
I'm off to Austria tomorrow. Setting off from Dusseldorf about lunch should get to the Austrian boarder by 17.00 (if we are lucky with traffic) and then it's play time in the Alps. Your article has really put me in the mood for a good long blast down there and then some fun in the mountains.
PS very nice car sir
