Driving from Nottingham to Swansea on Saturday, any suggestions for a more interesting route than a motorway slog?

I reasonably happy with the Welsh part of the journey, think any road through the Brecon Beacons should be good enough for me, I drove the A4069 2 years ago. Are there any exciting routes getting from Nottingham to Wales, or should i just accept the M1/M42 combination?

Was up at Blyton (Lincs) the other w/e so came thru Notts. to get to/from mid Wales.

Aim for Lichfield - Telford - Much Wenlock - Craven Arms (A49)- Ludlow -
Go thru Ludlow (useful stop off for food/comfort break)
Exit south over Ludford Bridge along B4361 - turning right for Richard's Castle on same numbered road -
Left (agan, still the B4361)* >> Leominster >> A44. Pass Morrison's and leep left in 40MPH >> Brecon >> stay on A44 but do not turn right when it goes for Pembridge and Kington.
A4112 ... Kinnersley >> A4111(briefly)Left a few hundred yards then right on to A438 >> Brecon
Instead of going for Swansea via Sennybridge go up A470 (as if for Cardiff) >> Storey Arms >> passing reservoirs on right then RIGHT on to A4059 >> Hirwaun then on to A465 (HoV road) >> Glynneath >> Neath >> Swansea

Thanks for the suggestion, should be a lot more fun than sitting on the motorways!

Did the route there and back, couldn't find an interesting way to Lichfield - made the mistake of trying the A5, which had the most ridiculous number of speed cameras - and the road to Ludlow wasn't great, but the rest was very good. Loved the A4059, fantastic sight lines for overtakes and some fun corners, didn't appreciate the free roaming sheep so much, had to dodge a couple and had a full on emergency stop for an especially suicidal one!
