Fun roads to Edinburgh

I'm heading up to Edinburgh (again) from Manchester on Monday, can anyone recommend a fun althernative to the soul destroying M6, A74, M8 route?

Also, anything to see along the way

Leave the M74 at J15 Moffat and follow the A701 to Edinburgh, great road and not out your way at all.

Slightly longer route leave the M6 at J44 and follow the A7, maybe a little busier than the first route but more fun than the M/way

A7 is great until Selkirk/Gala, but from there on is a bit of a pain in the rear. The other route via Moffat is better.
